According to Videocardz, the upcoming GeForce Kepler based graphic cards would be based on the GK104, GK106 and GK208 architectures which probably mean more entry to mid-range cards.

A new High-End model based on the GK110 core seems to be in plans by NVIDIA which could be used as a deterrent against AMD’s Hawaii GPU which is supposedly a “Titan Killer”. This new card could be a single chip ultimate GK110 chip featuring the fully enabled 15 SMX GeForce Kepler core and a 12 GB GDDR5 memory as featured on the Quadro K6000 which is currently the worlds fastest professional graphics card. Or it could be a dual graphics solution called “GeForce GTX 790″ based on two weaker GK110 cores but with a handsome amount of power over the GeForce GTX 690.

Change 'xx' to 'tt'.

GPU's from this point on from both camps are going to have ridiculous power tbh. Looking forward to seeing AMD's new GPU's then Nvidia's Maxwell, along with all the price cuts on older cards.. It's a good time to be a gamer..

Hypothetically is it very likely that high end maxwell would easily surpass the performance of 690 and 7990?

Maxwell is supposed to be a big leap, not just typical performance increase but also Nvidia's first GPU architecture that is able to access main memory 'unified memory addressing'. The first Maxwell parts may be on 28nm, with the refresh coming on 20nm, even more of an increase in performance etc.

The next few years, GPU's are going to be extremely powerful and more efficient in both design 'Memory sharing' and power use '20nm and below'.

So AMD have indeed left it too late.

They never stood a chance. Nvidia have always had their GK110 chip to bat away any attempt that AMD makes at having the single GPU performance crown.

Wasnt there rumours that the GK110 was supposed to be the 680 but it was basically too good (compared with what AMD had to offer) so Nvidia just used the GK104 for the 680?

Those were the initial rumours, but they are just that.

I quite simply can't decide what to do or buy, 780 lightning, 680 sli, 670 sli, see what amd do, wait for 20nm.

Yep, but if you mentioned that when all Nvidia had out was the 680, people would flame it to death lol. Now it's kind of excepted that Nvidia put out a midrange card clocked to compete '680' at the high end price point, as it could compete so well with the standard 7970.. Tbf if they didn't need to release full GK110 to compete then can't really blame them I guess. The prices the 670/680 are now makes them really good deals, and now we have the real deal 780 and Titan..

I'm in the same boat, i want all....but can only afford one :D +4930k OFC!
AMD is going to be = 780+- thats a given, so getting 670/680SLI will offer more performance but less fun, considerably cheaper as well.

Sometimes i wish i was Kaap and had the rigs to put them all in :D

What's the deal with the supposed die shrink to 20nm? Are we likely to see it this year?

I'm so confused by all this.

next year I think, shrink = more transistors less heat

I ask as I've seen articles claiming 20nm is struggling, that's it's on track for Q1 next year, and even that the AMD cards coming in October are going to be on it!

Then there's claims that it'll be a small boost in performance, claims that we'll see a "Titan killer", and claims that it'll be nothing but the same cards with a new BIOS for power savings.

Sometimes I wish the "tick, tock" principle would apply to graphics cards so that we know what to expect with every new generation.

Unfortunately with intel CPUs we know what to expect from each new generation without any Tick/Tock roadmap.

About 5% more performance and 5% less overclocking headroom over the last generation,

Arghhhhh.:(
