Hello there, hope any BMW folks can help.

Today my sister bought an '07 116i.. Noticed this evening the oil level light was on. There was a fairly sizeable patch on the pavement and drips where she'd driven off, she checked the oil with the dashboard thing and it says it needs an extra litre.

I haven't looked at the engine bay as I'm not with the car now, so I'm not sure where its from. When she bought it the guy at the dealer said it had had an oil change, the oil on the pavement was clear not black so perhaps its something silly like the sump nut. The dealer wasn't the most helpful chap in the world when we bought it so if he gets difficult, what is the most likely cause and what needs to be done to fix it properly?

Thanks :)

If they've just changed the oil (as the colour would indicate) then check the sump plug and oil filter - though I presume the filter is up in the engine bay like most bmw's so that one would be really obvious.

It's also not unknown for the cap to be left off....creating one almighty mess

Silly question but is it definitely oil?

I'm reasonably certain, I'm no mechanic but I've done a few oil changes and feels very lube-like between my fingers. I can't have a look now but the plan tomorrow is to stick a bit of oil in it and drive to the dealer in the morning. I'll have a look under the bonnet for anything obvious once the sun comes up.

It might be water vapour from the air conditioning :p

But either way, take it back. If you've just bought it, then they should top it up really.

That's kind of where I was going - I walked back to my car tonight, parked on a hill and my initial thought was "oh ***, something's leaking" until I got close enough to see it was just the air con puddle

So cardboard under the car revealed it was not oil but aircon juice. Poured a litre of car gravy into it this morning and the oil level light doesn't come up now which is good. I just go into panic mode with my sister's cars, she drove her Mini around for a week with the oil light on which thank god was just a sensor.

And of course by water vapour I mean the complete opposite - condensation :p

I loaned my Accord 2.4 Exec to a friend while I was on holiday and they called out the RAC for the water under the car from the A/C lmao.

I also have the same problem. I have been to countless garages to see whether they could see what the problem is. Each time I have just been wasting my money,

Cool story, that 6 year bump was more than worth waiting for...
