Hoping for teppic and martini to get in on this thread as they were active in the thread that led to the purchase of the FX6350.

Board: Crosshair V Formula. RAM: 2 x 8GB Corsair Dominator 10-10-10-27. GPU: GigaByte GTX680 4GB

Cooling: Corsair 900D case and XSPC loop cooling the GPU and CPU. 480mm rad with 4 Corsair AF120 fans. 4 AF120 fans on the case. ALL fans are in low speed mode and the D5 pump is in low speed so there's a tonne of room for more cooling from the cooling system.

Had the 8150, was crap. Bench results as follows:

CineBench - 7.02 CPU & 48.93 GPU.
World of Tanks - 47.5 FPS average
Train Simulator 2013 - 49.65 FPS average
SimCity - 33.28 FPS average

CPU was clocked to 4.5Ghz at 1.475v. Aida stable, temps averaged around 50 between gaming and general use.

Thread the other day basically got to the point, my CPU could be better. So, I bought an FX6350 and it arrived today.

Plugged it all in and here's the stock results.

Stock clock - 3.9Ghz. Boost clock - 4.4Ghz which is surprising as it's meant to be 4.2Ghz. Stock boost voltage - 1.45v.

Bench results:

CineBench - 5.43 CPU & 51.71 GPU.
World of Tanks - 55 FPS average
Train Simulator 2013 - 48.8 FPS average
SimCity - 42.5 FPS average

Very nice I'm thinking. What's most important to note is the minimum FPS across the board as gone up a lot. 15FPS in Train Simulator!

Overclocking now...I'm thinking 5Ghz is easy because it is. But there's more in it and the results aren't quite what's expected.

Using a 22.5 x 225 configuration at 1.5625v in the BIOS, real world is 1.55 volts. I don't think this too high as the Bulldozer's voltage was upped 0.3 volts and this is only up 0.1 volts.

Clock speed is 5.1Ghz.

CineBench - 6.37 CPU & 59.71GPU @ 47 degrees celsius.
World of Tanks - 53 FPS average
Train Simulator 2013 - not tested yet
SimCity - not tested yet

I think the average may be margin of error and I haven't tested the other two games yet because I had the setting at a point where I was getting hangs after 10 minutes in Train Sim and 10 minutes in AIDA. Going to test again now with altered NB-CPU and a couple of other things that should help.

What I'm after, in terms of people's experience and knowledge, is how far can these CPUs voltages go? The Bulldozer went 0.3 above stock, can this? My temps under Aida stresstesting were around 60c but there's more capacity in my cooling.

What's the max people have seen on these chips? Is 5.1Ghz a lot? teppic was saying 5Ghz on air is no problem yet I've been reading people saying 4.5 - 4.7 is huge and 5Ghz is heroic?

Real world, temps are the same they were before. Peaking at 55c in games, idling at under 30 and fluctuating between 30 and 50 in general use, I think half that is the software though.

Looking forward to some knowledge being imparted. :)

Just wanted to add, I can pass post at this voltage at 5.4Ghz but it hangs when the Windows Loading screen loads.

More voltage? Other setting? Hit a wall?

Surely there is no limit to voltage use as long as you can keep it cool. We keep hearing about 7GHz clocks at 2v, so they can take it, just got to be kept cool?

Piledriver does help with minimums, not entirely sure why.

There's something up with your 5.1GHz clock, as a CPU intensive game like World of Tanks shouldn't go down in fps with a 700MHz increase in clock. My guess is that the cores are throttling. Keep an eye on the clock speed of each core to make sure this isn't happening.

My advice is to aim for 5GHz first and get it stable, without any throttling, so you can maintain 5GHz across all cores. Then try to tweak it higher. 4.5GHz is definitely not a huge overclock on the 6300/50s, they pretty much all will do that on a decent board. What you've said sounds like the 8320/8350s.

6300s have been known to get a bit above that under water and be stable, but you'll be using up a lot of power to do it.

8 pack has been working on high overclocks on Piledriver just recently so he will be able to give some very good advice.

Sweet. My 5.1Ghz clock at 1.5625v isn't stable. Get hardware failure during stress test and Train Sim freezes after 5 minutes or so. Temps are ok though.

I'm going to get the 5Ghz clock stable. Back voltage down to 1.5v. Really, it's how much voltage can this thing take? Is it entirely temperature dependent? The Bulldozer was fine at just over 1.5v but that thing wouldn't budge above 4.9ghz even at 1.6v. I was getting crazy! I'm sure it isn't throttling. In AIDA, the voltage stays constant and the usage does to. Temps are consistent as well. There is a thing you can do on Aida that shows throttling but I don't know what it is, will research over the weekend. I'm running AIDA at 5GHz and 1.5v as I type this, no problems yet so 5GHz looks to be stable which I found earlier.

My bench tests aren't entirely scientific as the WoT game is a bit iffy and each test is different. It's just me playing the game, playing two games and taking an average.

It's great to see the minimums up as that's what was causing the problems in games, dropping to low mins. A more consistent FPS is great. I mean, 50FPS with a min of 35FPS will do me just fine but I like to see just how much I can get out of something.

I haven't had a single BSOD which is odd because the Bulldozer was a BSOD *******. Anything it didn't like, BSOD. Till my OS corrupted and then nothing really worked.

So, more voltage? What's peoples thought's on NB, HT, RAM timings etc and anything else worth mentioning. I think I've got everything pretty optimized but just in case.

I really want to get over 5. Just look at the jump in CineBench results!!! :D

Usage doesn't show throttling. The CPU can still be at 100% but instead of 5GHz, it'll have dropped to a much lower clock, possibly under 3GHz. This can happen because the CPU gets too hot, or because the VRMs are struggling -- the latter can happen when the CPU is actually very cool.

1.5v is ok under water, but I haven't really looked into >5GHz overclocks so I'm not the best one to ask about that. I read in reviews of the 6300/6350 that stable clocks were achieved, but not much higher. I think 5.4GHz is very unlikely unless you've got some liquid Nitrogen handy.

What setting are you using for Sim City? It looks like it must be close to maxed out.

Unless people think chips can run under ambient on air, so while you think it might be cool at 60c, the reality is that it isn't. By no means disregard them, but it's not as low as it's pretending to be.

Also keep an eye on socket temperature, as too high on that can cause throttling.

Do you have a quad rail PSU? I remember they can cause some issues if you're sucking up too much on a rail, I had troubles when I was doing some 4.4GHZ on a Thuban.

Can't work out how to change thread titles!. lol.

Every setting bar the AA setting in Train Sim is absolutely maxed out.

What causes the system to freeze rather then BSOD or restart? What could cause my AIDA to keep throwing hardware failure alerts and stopping the stress test?

I've been watching CPU-Z while testing, no reduction in speed at all. Stuck at 5078mhz.

My 5GHz isn't stable now but I think I had the config 25x200 rather then 23x220 which is it now.

More work required I think. Just need to know if the NB, HT setting have massive influences. I know too high can, such as HT anything over 2600 causes problems but would lower speeds improve stability?

Quad rail? No idea. It's a 5 year old 1100 or 1200 watt OCZ unit. Would the PSU not providing enough juice cause freezes rather then BSODs and complete crashes, and hardware failure alerts during stress testing?

Normally I wouldn't be too bothered about the stress test but games are crashing too. I know, I had the Bulldozer at a speed that wouldn't pass stress test. Used to just cook and BSOD but played games absolutely fine.
 
You know the 12v rail? The one that powers most of the stuff in a PC?
In a Quad rail it's split into 4.

So where a single rail PSU may have say 80A, a Quad rail might have 20A on 4 12v's.
 
What kind of crazy voltage were you giving that chip to try and boot with 5.4Ghz lmao :D

Edit: Your PSU will say whether it's a multi rail, just look on the side and will have 12v1 12v2 12v3 etc etc
 
I've found it's the memory causing issue. Set the speed to auto and don't stress the memory in AIDA and it's stable at 5.08Ghz at 1.5V. Temps don't get to 50. I've had this before with this memory. Has to be set to auto for some reason. Even setting it to the speed the auto setting sets it to causes issues.

So, I'm gonna try for some more speed after I've run a couple of games that were crashing yesterday.


What's peoples favourite memory for OC'ing? I have 2 8GB sticks of Corsair Dominator which I thought was quite good stuff. Is the fact they're 8GB stick more problematic then 4 x 4GB?
 
If you're increasing the bus speed it'll be increasing the memory speed, which might be making it unstable.

5.2GHz is impressive. Are all the cores staying at 5.2GHz under load? Do some benchmarks :)
