New Golf Mk7

That's very surprising given that it's a Golf.

What I mean is that they don't look anything special. They're all a bit, boring. I know that the Mk4 wasn't particularly easy on the eye but I don't think they've come a long way with the new design.

All 3 VAGs look very much alike IMO

They look no more alike than do any other small hatchbacks.

Personally I prefer the look of the Golf.

I sort of agree and disagree. Generally I think the Golf looks totally boring and far more like a facelifted Mk6 than a new model (as the Mk6 looked like a facelifted Mk5). I have to laugh when people claim the new A3 looks exactly like the last model when it looks like a totally different car compared to the Mk6/7 Golf.

That said, at least they've "gone to town" on the looks of the R. The new S3 looks almost exactly like any other S-Line A3.

Well yes mechanically speaking it is (or rather would be if a 2.0T actually existed, there's still no word whether there'll be one or not).

Styling wise though, you'd have thought they'd have differentiated it a bit more. It just looks too much like the S-Line to my eyes. Maybe they're looking to sell more RS3s this time round and are reserving their more "extreme" styling for that.

I like the look of the R but as mentioned, who will really buy one for the money? Only really either enormous Golf lovers or people that are given / lent them.

Is the price tag confirmed? IMO VW would be incredibly foolish to launch it at the £40k+ postulated earlier in the thread, since the M135i starts at barely more than £30k and even the Merc equivalent is well under £40k.

I sort of agree, but would it still be incredibly foolish if the aim was not to sell lots? Obviously they'd love to sell loads and the VW scene tax does strange things to buyers, but I think they must realise that the R is never going to be a massive profit-making exercise.

But yes, compare it to the M135i and it in no way washes its face at £40k or anywhere near it.

Base price for the S3 is about £31k though, they generally don't price the vw's any higher than the equivalent Audi.

That doesn't mean it wont require about £5k of options for most buyers mind you

I would be surprised if they price the Golf R higher than the S3, I suspect they will price it at 30k but drop some of the standard equipment the GTI has, mainly the radar cruise control system. The UK GTi wasn't going to get this either with the first batch of demo cars not having it but they added it from the first batch of customer orders.

Hasn't that always been one of the major selling points of the S3 though? It looks conservative, goes well, is very usable in all conditions. I really like the new one, it looks sharp, not over the top.

Certainly not since they've got rid of the V6 - it's basically just your run of the mill hot hatch now with a little Haldex for added spice. Four exhausts? One per cylinder HAHA
Unfortunately that's the way the market's going (until the M135i turned up, anyway).
