Dell U2713HM Revision Numbers?

Ordered one this morning from Overclokers and will be getting it delivered tomorrow, will update on what panel version once I've got it

I really hope you get a good one. Dealing with Dell support is a real test of one's patience.

I used to deal with their Business support for many years, and I now realise that I took it for granted that you'd get someone on the phone who would actually listen.

Thanks :)

Got it delivered about an hour ago. It's April A01 according to the box so looks like Overclockers may not have the latest panel revision in stock.

First impressions are great. Can't spot any cross hatching which was my main worry having read some user reviews. Lighting on screen is pretty uniform bar a little bit of glow at the bottom middle of the screen on a black background.

Certainly looks amazing in day light, will be interesting to see how it fairs tonight when any glow or bleed will be more noticeable.

Good to hear that you got a good one runebinder :)

All 3 of my U2713HMs have been returned. Now I am back to being monitor-less and it hurts. I still really want a U2713HM, but I don't know if I have it in me to wait ~3 months for the new stock to hit the UK.

Damn you Dell. Damn you.

Still very happy with mine all this time in and got most things working over HDMI now.

Higher price and I think it only has a 1 year warranty :(

Why can't someone just make a perfect 27" 1440p monitor? What would you buy right now Badass?

Has a 2 year warranty and can be easily upgraded to 5. Dell don't even let you extend after purchase. You can upgrade whenever you want. Not to mention QC is near perfect (I have 2 incomprehensibly small yellow blotches of backlight bleed that can be only seen under complete darkness from a specific angle - the rest is the regular IPS glow which I'm perfectly happy with). Customer support replied a few hours after my request, not days and their website is very, very easy to navigate.

The stand also has a nicer design, although it doesn't swivel, but if I really wanted it, I'd buy myself a vesa stand. The matte coating is literally perfect, there is nothing like the cross hatching and there is no sign that the matte coating is even there.

OSD is really nice, if not a tiny bit fiddly due to the touch buttons and has a fair few options - low response time mode is perfect and leaves no compromise on image quality whatsoever. Looks exactly the same as otherwise - and I can actually play games like CS:GO with no issue, unlike on the higher response mode I must've left the Dell on because the game was nearly unplayable.

Negatives? Standard colours out of the box were too yellow on the whites for me (10-bit), so all I did was change the colour temperature to a cooler level and turn down the contrast a tiny bit which gave me white looking whites and otherwise similar colour quality to the Dell, albeit FAR more punchy - almost like AMOLED, which I personally adore.

There are some issues with image display in some applications, namely windows photo viewer, where colours appear a little drained - this is to do with the management of the screen in Windows - It looks like the sRGB mode on the monitor which is sort of depressing to look at because it crushes the natural wide gamut of the screen xD I'm sure there is a config option but it doesn't bother me at all. All I've done by buying a 10-bit screen is future proof myself since we should start seeing 10-bit come in more over the next 5 years.

Other problem I had was with HDMI - the monitor is very fussy with EDID I think, couldn't get it to work with a PS3 or Xbox at first, but later got the PS3 working flawlessly - but the Xbox refuses to work. This is not the first time I've heard of something like it, and the Xbox also refuses to work on one of my other screens now so I think it's just a terrible implementation of HDMI. Got it working fine with my MHL connected smartphone too - it works flawlessly with any PC.

So while this monitor is not perfect, I personally think it's one of the best - if not the best - 2K monitors out there. My advice is to pay the extra money. I just cbf with Dell and don't regret spending more to get a higher quality monitor and level of service.

EDIT:

What I will say, is that many new 2560x1440 monitors are coming out and I think they are based off of this LG display, as this monitor is just about the newest one to market. There may be some cheaper ones soon and they seem to have an extra port or two than the LG (LG has DP, HDMI and DVI but no VGA - not that it concerns me XD)

Thanks very much for the detailed write up Razyre! You're certainly selling it to me.

Do you know how much it costs to extend the warranty to 5 years? I wanted to do that with the U2713HM, but Dell's base price for the monitor is £200 more than OCUK. Even with my Dell VIP discount I could not get it down to anywhere near ~£450.

The Windows Photo Viewer issue you've described does worry me somewhat. Whilst I'm not a photographer by any means, I'm buying the screen so that my photos look good. I guess the easy solution is to use a better image viewer.

Would be nice if there was a way to view these things in the flesh before committing!

Found a guy on ebay selling a U2713HM he bought on 24 July and hasn't used because he bought two. Hopefully he'll send me pictures of the unit to see if it has backlight bleed.

The other option is to wait it out until the Apple conference on 10 September (hopefully). If new MacBook Pros appear, then my money will be going on one of those and the monitor will have to wait.

Well, if you give up on the Dells then you can always try one of these (they aren't stocked by OCUK yet but they're about £550) and if you're not impressed send it back ^^

This monitor is really personal preference due to the colour reproduction and perhaps a few less inputs/slight HDMI issues if you're not using a Windows PC/Mac etc. but if it fits the bill it's awesome.

I've just looked at photos in photo viewer and I must say, I don't think they look bad at all. I may have been exaggerating at first. I think photo viewer may be showing regular sRGB with more realistic colours, whereas in the OS itself you see punchier colours. This is all tweakable with ICC and colour calibration so I really wouldn't worry.

At the end of the day, you have a customer satisfaction guarantee so you can try the monitor and send it back if need be.

I can't remember the exact price of the warranty extension but I don't /remember/ it being extortionate. I think you can extend it by up to 5 years, so you could in theory end up with 7 years. Were I you, I'd extend by a year or two only, because when 4K comes in then we can upgrade to those monitors ;)

That's true, but I'd have to pay for the return shipping since the unit won't be faulty.

The chances of me plugging in anything that isn't a PC/Mac is very remote. I've sold all my consoles due to lack of use, and my work commitments are the reason why I need the large monitor.

Fair enough, however a calibration tool will require even more outlay.

A 7 year warranty is crazy! I'm pretty sure I would have moved on in 5 years at the most. If Apple release a retina 27", I'd probably sell a kidney and get one of those!

The guy on ebay sent me photos of his February 2013 A00 U2713HM, and whilst the bottom left-hand corner is perfect, he's got some pretty bad IPS glow in the top and bottom right-hand corners. The opposite corners are pitch black by comparison, so I don't understand why it's not uniform.

I wish I was less fussy :)

PS. Should I create a new thread? I feel like I'm trashing this one.

Can someone post a picture of the box to show where to look for the build date/revision number, cheers.

It's on one of the narrow sides of the box.

Well if it's within a 14-30 day window and you're buying from a decent seller, they won't mind at all. You don't need to pay shipping.

You should be fine with connectivity then.

You don't necessarily need to calibrate it if you're like me. I'm perfectly happy with my small image tweak. You can always google the issue if it irritated you.

Haha, I'd probably wait it out for a non Apple product XD While you may be buying a Macbook Pro (In my opinion one of the few even remotely attractive prospects in terms of Apple products) I think their screens are really rather bad value for money. You get a monitor that does everything that another monitor would do, but with less connections and a glossy screen (anti-reflective or not).

IPS glow on the LG is very powerful in both of the bottom corners, and spreads nicely up the display. It's pretty obvious IPS glow but I would definitely call it uniform and it's much less distracting than I'd imagine two corners on one side being. I think with ANY IPS monitor you're gonna get you some glow and I don't think it's worth putting you off - it's a feature of the panels and doesn't affect your work. Perhaps black bars in films are the only thing that show it up at all? Even then, only in darkness.

If you want to start another thread, go ahead. Link me to it in this thread.

Mine was bought from OCUK on the 5th July and is fine appart from a small amount of bleed in one corner and my revision number is a00 Feb 2013

I've just received a reply from the sales department at OCUK, and apparently there is no way to get a message from the sales team to the warehouse team to look for a particular revision.

They would rather I purchase the monitor, they pay for delivery, RMA it if it's faulty, and they pay the return shipping.

Seems like a diabolical waste of time and money.

Exactly what they told me.
