***ArmA 3 Thread***

Complaining about optimization before the game has even released is a bit of a joke. That's all I've seen today on every server. I think people sometimes forget that ARMA is a MIL SIM first and foremost and every complex SIM takes it's toll on most computers.

A lot of people seem to have their view distance cranked right up as well which absolutely tanks even the best of hardware. Give it time and the game will play just fine, if it's still like this months after release then I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong.

Good run tonight on MGT server with soldierboy, nice gunning pal!

Wasteland on Altis with working vehicles :D

Just came off it flying about in an attack chopper with suarez7,
(excellent pilot!!) brilliant fun:D,
Unfortunately the fps were dire though but it's still early days yet, normally very good on your server (40-80).
Will get some pics up tomorrow:)

^^^^ stick to WARZ or whatever it passes for these days.:rolleyes:

ARMA 3 IS Best purchase of the year for me.

.

Good for you, the insult of WarZ can back away with that smiley of yours :o

and Arma 2 had great optimization when it was released as final? ;)

Looks like I stepped on some toes because I don't like Arma 3, oh dear!

You need to play around with the settings to get it running smoothly. Turn off all that post processing/blur nonsense for a start. Lower the view distance, shadow/object draw distance, also clouds and PiP.

I'll mess around with the settings again tomorrow, it was fine(ish) in the alpha

The low fps you get on some of these big new missions is just down to mission files being poorly optimized.

Once the popular mission makers get back on the scene, all shall be good!

ARMA 2 ran fine for me throughout the time I played it.

You're entitled to your opinion but I think saying it's the biggest waste of money this year after buying games like WarZ which were completely unplayable for months is rather extreme don't you think?

Just flew around Altis in a little heli and for a beta I am completely blown away by the graphics and performance. I only have a 1gb card but do have a fast(ish) processor. 1080p all settings high, no AA but have SMAA on ultra, AF ultra, draw distance about 4500, object about 2500. Even in the largest town it was over 40 fps.

Granted with a ton of AI it will drop a lot, not so bothered with MP until the game is released and it is optimized. What an amazing landscape they have crafted! Missing the big wooded areas of Cherno though :)

COmpare cherno with arma2 mod maps. Ezbekistan, podagorks, FATA etc etc

Now imagine A3 modded maps. With Altis as the base line of quality.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This in a nutshell :)

Servers can also limit view distance, grass and foliage quality and other graphical limits to try and give everyone a fair chance.

A lot of

If {};
then {};
ELSE
{};

And

If true {code} then
Else

Causes a hell of a lot of CPU work on the server, remembering that the Arma Server still really uses only one core for maths and one core for sound, really difficult to balance the load out on servers..

Talking about Vramm, my 7950 uses all available vramm 3gig worth with A3, so I limit it with -vramm = 2800 in my start up options and it increased it by a few frams, don't know how, just did..

What about "while {*looping stuff*}"? Still very much a beginner here but I would have thought scripts that constantly loop themselves would be a far bigger server killer than if {something} then {this} else {that}, end of. I only ask cause I'm having a look through the R3F logistics and arty stuff as I wanted to know how the airlift option only pops up when in range. When I found it was basically on a huge loop it made me wonder if its going to incur a performance penalty for something purely cosmetic and something that people probably dont care about too much...

Also im pretty sure A3 just uses whatever it can get in terms of vram. It maxed out a 1gb 7850 I had, so a grabbed a bargain 2gb 7850 off ebay, yet its still maxed the vram on that as well with no noticable performance change. It also seems to gradually increase over time (ie start around 600-800mb then wrok upto 2gb in around 15-20 mins). Won't go as far as saying its a memory leak as I don't really know what I'm talking about

What is your name on steam Sari / Thinge? :D

Oh and performance wise, I think it's quite funny really. Ak with his oc'd 2500k had exactly the same fps as me with my AMD 960T unlocked to 6 core (oc'd too ofc). Nothing like a 17fps slideshow on Domination :D

I use sari, but I think you can find me better from thingemajib (look for the plane icon). Do wish I could get rid of the thingemajib though. If I ever get the chance to go back in time I would visit my 11yo self and smack him in the face for cooking that one up...

edit: Don't really like getting involved in this stuff but meh. Leave Warz/ISS out of the A3 thread eh guys? If you've got anything useful to say about it then there's a perfectly good 186 page thread about it right here...

Not familiar with the arma3 editor but depends whats in the loop and what its conditions are i.e if onGround was to represent a player beinig on the ground it will do ShootGun(); untill hes not on the ground

Code:
while (onGround)
{
ShootGun();
}

A couple of mates and I had a good old explore session last night with Altis. Threw a module in to be able to skip time by an hour. so we could flick through and see the day/night cycles and such.

What really blew me away was the dawn in particular. As the sun began to rise, with the early morning low hanging mist, skirting through a small stream bed avoiding a KA, and trying to kill a small patrol so we could loot some AA. Just really stunned me.

And driving around on a stary moonlit night with nods off and using the vehicle lights.

I've not played A3 since alpha release and i completely forgot how mindblowinglygood the lighting is. The game, and this island is just stunning.

While the clan doesn't see arma3 even remotely viable as a platform in the next 3-4 months. We're extremely excited for that moment when it is able to offer the arma2 content we rely on. That will be an ace day.

For me the game just oozes atmosphere, even in the editor where it's just you on the map walking around.
The weather effects are fantastic too, one thing i would like to see added is a few little sound effects in regards to weather though, E.g when you change to first person view, i'd like the sound of the rain and wind to be far more noticeable.
The pitter patter of rain drops hitting your helmet, the wind howling and trees creaking as you walk through a wooded area, there's no greater depressing noise than rain hitting your helmet while you crawl into Op/sentry position or lay motionless in a field.
small details that i feel would have a huge effect in adding to the realism.
