BF4 Crossfire 7850 or new card?

Go xfire, i just did that recently, check the sleeping dogs benchmark thread its beating oc'd 680's and 7970's.

Not beating mine Angsty pants. Well, you're being my 7950 by the smallest fraction but i will bench again now to (try and) beat your score. :p

My single 7970

Score 62.2, GPU 7970 @1250/1823, CPU 2700k @4.8 LtMatt Link 13.2 drivers

My single 7950

Score 55.3, GPU 7950 @1208/1750, CPU 2700k @4.8 LtMatt Link 13.8 Beta 2 drivers

Angst

9. Score 56.0, GPU 7850 @950/1250, CPU 2500k @4.5 Angst Link 13.6 drivers

they won't be stable at those clocks in games though, but you should manage an easy 1050/1400mhz without touching voltages

maybe 1150-1200mhz core with adding voltage to be stable

7850 crossfire does seem decent actually looking at Angsts results, but still for an extra £50 you can get a 7950 and sell the games that come with it to recoup further money. I still think represents the best option imo.

I've got 2 x 7850s + 3570k + Gigabyte mobo so can do some benchmarking for you when i get home tonight / tomorrow to give you an idea how yours might perform in Xfire seeing as it'll be pretty much the same configuration.

My CPU is @ 4.6 and i have overclocked the GPUs but can't remember what they are off the top of my head.

Thank you very much for all the replies.

I still am no closer but would appreciate it wesimmo if you could possibly do some BF3 benchmarking at ultra (1080p with 4xMSAA) just so I can get an idea.

One thing I should point out is my PC is primarily an HTPC that I put another £250 into so it could play BF3. When I first built it I fiddled with GPU tweak and it was stable with the core at 1200, however, at some point GPU tweak messed up and I was unable to unlock past 1050. I sorted it once but it happened again I didn't bother messing about again so it has been running like this for about 6 months. Same with my CPU its not overclocked at all. I am not opposed to the idea but simply do not have the time/patience/interest to test for hours with 5MHz etc increments.

I don't want to buy a new/additional GFX card and need to spend hours overclocking/testing it to get the performance I would expect. I am having a very hard time finding any benchmarks from later 2013 (after AMD's new drivers) for crossfired 7850's in BF3 so am having to rely on your responses. But was hoping that as Ultra on a single 7850 at 1080p with FXAA was acceptable (I still get the odd annoying large FPS drop occasionally if **** is going down and its 64 players) adding another one should give at least another 60% performance and meet BF4's ultra requirements due to being the same enchanced engine (very aware cannot judge until the games release but being realistic).

I don't mind a quick OC (and fair enough if it crashes I lower it) but not tweaking for hours.

I realise this is the wrong forum but as a side question:

Would I get a noticeable improvement from OC my CPU? If so, I have looked and the guides on the OC forum but they were quite out of date last time I looked. Is it a few simple options in the bios?

Thank you again.

For me, overclocking both was really straighforward, i never looked to get the absolute limit, just upped the CPU clock speed, gave it a bit of offset voltage and away i went.

GPUs were a case of using Afterburner, move a couple of sliders for the clock speeds and set the power limit to +20.

I used GPU tweak and the Sapphire one briefly so have used the above settings for my 7850 before but I was mainly referring to the fact that the above replies have mentioned xxx is better than xxxx but not if you cant overclock to xxxx. As said, don't mind a simple overclock but don't want to skew my decision by basing it on the POTENTIAL OC that could require hours.

I may ask more about OC my CPU in a bit, at least after I have the GPU sorted :p

quick oc,no messing with voltages

set core slider to 1050mhz set memory slider to 1400mhz

set power control slider to 20% save exit, thats all you have to do

you only fiddle with voltages if you want more

99% of 7850's will do those clocks on stock v

I second that motion. Angst, clock them up.

I would but cant get voltage control, if i use gpu tweak i can get voltage but not fan profiles and if i use afterburner i can get fan profiles but not voltage :(

matt will know on afterburner

you have to do something in the user/config files if I remember right to unlock voltage adjustment

ive only used trixx with single cards

I used to use that but for some reason it doesnt do the fan on second card.

Disable ulps for fan control on the second gpu, you may want to try the latest AB, a new one comes out and new features/fixes can be applied, but bugs can surface too though, but it's certainly worth a look.

Have you tried the very latest beta 14 of afterburner? A while back they added voltage control for previously locked cards.
