i was planning my build when i thought...is it worth getting a 4770k CPU and a more expensive motherboard, or would it be better to get the 3770k and a cheaper motherboard...does anyone know if the money difference is worth it? also if the 3770k is better, what's a good MB for it?

Just go for the 4770k tbh, it's actually a few quid cheaper than the 3770k on ocuk at present. Also the 4770k is a bit faster, (ive owned both). What sort of features do you require from a motherboard, and whats your budget for it?

My Haswell mobo was £55, I can reach 4.6Ghz stable, and run 4.4Ghz 24/7. The B85 chipset is the same as the high end in all but name tbh. You lose a couple of sata ports and USB slots, but still have more than any one person could use :p. People will say to spend more but there really isn't any need now that overclocking is enabled on cheaper boards.

My B85 has 4 pin CPU power and all same spec as other boards, I.e PCI-3.0 etc. Well worth the money. Got my 4770K and Mobo for £300 all in, couldn't be happier with it. Ideal until Haswell -E or Skylake as a replacement in a few years..

Haswell Processor Overclocking to H87 and B85 Motherboards

Intel won't be happy till they've removed that overclocking on B85 :p

Haha, I think Intel are fine with it, there was a rumor that they wanted it removed but it didn't seem to come from Intel. I've had official B85 bios updates since and all still support overclocking. Hopefully this will continue with Skylake, nice cheap mobo and decent CPU for a few hundred bucks :p.

Yeah I guess the worst that can happen is that Intel get something into future bios to limit overclocking, if that happens I just won't update again lol. Won't be changing anytime soon. So this setup is ideal for a while, blinding deal on the mobo. Absolute steal for the price. Plan on using this prob right up until Haswell -E or Skylake..
