Moving to America

also minimum wage in the US has gone up a lot in most states over the last 10 years. , e.g. here in Oregon min wage is almost $10 an hour so similar to the UK, you then have much cheaper living costs in most places. The downside will be no health care for botoom paid job

Tell him he'd missing out on perhaps the biggest opportunity of his entire life.

I'd be on the flight tomorrow.

.

This, not much more to say. Just tell him to do it, support him self and struggle for the next fewyears, lt of us students struggle anyway. So he won't be in much of a different situation to many of them.

Out of state tuition fees for state unis are around 32-40k.... In state are usually 9-12.

Move to a state with a good school?

Your parents then perhaps help him out with rent, he gets a job and stick it out for a year, save money and go to school next year.

4/5 years of hard work will be worth it.

Worst case if it doesn't work out he comes back here.

Tell him to use his brit charm to pull some rich US chick who will buy him fast cars & big houses.*

*may not be serious, but may work.

Am I the only one here wondering how a permanent resident visa was gained without the parents even living there? I want to know your secret so I can do the same...

yes seems a odd. I have been married to an american for 13 years and looking at the process it would still be a big deal for us to move over there and me get a green card

No it wouldn't, its quite easy if you have been together a long time. Just file the paperwork, have the interview, medical etc then await the good news. :p

and have you seen the paperwork?

Yes, takes maybe 8 full hours of work split between all the different forms spread over the 1 year process, including time to research everything. IF you can't be bothered filling forms that mostly consist of DoB, name, address, education, etc then you don't deserve a green card!

Probably parents are not British/have foreign passport (e.g. India) and applied through green-card lottery.

Surely he can't go if his residence was gained as part of a family application, it's crazy hard to get a green card to the states, if you have guaranteed employment, property is cheaper, loads more land, cheaper taxes (depending on state), only downside is the healthcare, why the hell isn't your family emigrating? It's a once in a lifetime chance, turning down a green card is like tearing up a winning lottery ticket

The USA isn't some shining beacon of light setting the example for all other nations.
1/3 of female personal in the armed forces are raped in the USA.

There's nothing special about being a citizen as they'll let anyone in with 500k to invest. It is a corrupt, backwards country that should be avoided.
