Irritating squealing from Corsair HX 750

I've fitted the new Corsair to my rig and the squealing noise is unbelievable. It only does it when the system is idle (which is the worst possible time to do it) but i'm not sure what's causing it.

Funnily enough I connected it to my other PC and it didn't squeal at me at all. I suspected it was my GTX 770 so I swapped it into the PC but it still didn't make the squealing noise at all. As soon as I connected the PSU back to my main system, sure enough, the squealing started again.

Has anyone had this issue and, more importantly, did you solve it? It sounds like a pig is doing Morse code.

I REALLY DO NOT want to have to RMA this power supply because it costs me about a tenner each time and it negates the free shipping i'm entitled to because I don't get it back. And i'm fed up with returning stuff.

Can anyone help me here?

It will be coil whine, very annoying and can happen randomly regardless of your components, as you've demonstrated. Some parts with other parts cause coil whine, where as others won't.

Can you not send it back under DSR?
If not, RMA.

I could do mate but like I said I don't get the postage amount refunded to me so it puts me off the idea. It's so typical that it would happen on my main rig but not the other one.

Could it be damaging to either the PSU or my system in the long term? What makes the noise worse is that i've got the side panel off, but that's due to heat issues. With the side panel on it's not actually too bad, though it's still audible.

i had a hx myself, the cause of the squealing is actually the fan, because it doesnt run at low loads and low temp.
when the psu hits the temp where it starts up. the initial power is too low so the fan doesnt turn fast enough so the bearings in the fan makes that squeal.
same when it powers down after it cools itself.

its a pain in the bum. i rma-ed my hx twice. in the end i just got a refund and bought something else

This is exactly why I haven't upgraded my old trusty power supply at the moment as I've got sensitive hearing. Out of curiosity what power supply did you buy? Seems like Corsair and even Seasonic can have issues like this.

For the OP unless your power supply has a fan mode (which I don't think it does) I think you'll need to send it back if you can't live with it. I doubt another one of the same model would make much difference.

The cause of my squealing isn't the fan bearings because the fan isn't spinning at all when the unit makes the noise. In fact, apart from the fan spinning on boot up I never notice it spinning back up again at all but i've not been gaming.

If fan bearings was the cause of your PSU noise then that's a mechanical noise, mine is definitely electrical.

I am able to pinpoint the exact point where the noise emanates from; it is coming from the the right-most side of the PSU - the end where the modular cables attach. If I put my ear to that end it sounds louder than if i stick my ear to where the fan is.

I hear you - my HX 520 is now 6 years old and yet that doesn't bloody squeal at me.

initially, the corsair hx+ 650w. ram-ed twice then decided to get the silverstone st65f-g
http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=350 <- this one
whisper quiet at idle and load
best part is that its 140mm long and modular. so it fits sff rigs

I'm hesitant to return it because i'm worried the replacement would be the same.

I've swapped all parts except for memory and motherboard now yet nothing makes a difference. The way I see it I have two options:

1) Return the HX 750 and put the money towards a Haswell CPU and motherboard that'll sip less juice so I can go back to the trusty HX 520 without fear of melting it.

2) Purchase an AM3+ motherboard and hope that the squealing stops.

In all honesty I don't know what to do.

I've got a HX 620 watt which is 6 years old, it must have been a golden age for Corsair :)

As for returning it for a replacement there is always the possibility of it being the same or worse still it could work for a while then start to be noisy after a few months...

ah. must be a different noise then. mine squealed just as the fan started to rev up and just after it revved down

edit: does your psu sound like this? http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=23715367&postcount=1

If I had to choose the best component i've ever bought it wouldn't be a GPU or whatever it'd be the HX 520. It's survived all the upgrades, all the knocks and has always done what I needed it to do.

That said, i'm amazed how cool running the HX 750 is and i've only ever seen the fan spin when I start-up/reboot the PC. I've not been playing games but still the machine is on!

HX850, get the same intermitently though. I wear headphones for games / movies etc so it doesn't really bother me. I onlynotice it when I am doing actual work that doesn't require any sound, but then I normally have the TV on so it masks it.

I was going to RMA it but simply couldn't be arsed unwiring everything again.

My HX 750w did that so I returned it and got a Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 650w and it very quiet.

I wanted to stick with Corsair because my old HX 520 is legendary but if the replacement is the same as the one i'm sending back I will have to consider a different brand.

Yeah it is a pain in the arse but OCUK apparently can refund up to £12 in postage costs, which I didn't know until today. Makes it less painful.

I feel your pain OP. I have a TX850 that squeals only when I am starting my PC up. But never does it under load. It's as if it just needs to warm up and then all is well.

I also have sensitive hearing and although it does annoy me slightly when starting my PC it soon goes away. I was going to send it back a couple of months ago but the Corsair CS is much more of a pain i thought i would live with it instead.
