Is it my Power supply? and do Mobo's matter?

So i switched my computer on this morning,. and received nothing but a black screen and a long beep. This has happened a few times before,. and usually i just unplug all peripherals, and then boot with only power and monitor plugged in. However,.. pressing the button resulted in no response. No power going anywhere,. no noise from the power supply,. no fans whirring etc. There is no power going to anywhere,.. im pretty sure it's the power supply,. but could it be the case?

On another subject, i am planning to buy an Fx 8350 along with new PSU,.. however my current mother board isn't a massive high end gaming spec. It does support socket 3 +, does the Mobo really matter that much for gaming etc?

(Also planning to upgrade my GPU in time too,. but waiting for AMd's new line up later this year)

Thanks

Hello,

I would agree with you, its sounds like the PSU has gone, One thing you could try is taking the ram out and see if you get any beep? Are they any lights on any of the MOBO or your Graphic Card?

There is absolutely nothing,. no lights,. no noise no nothing lol. The worst thing it,. it didn't give any indication of breaking. No flash, no bang, no smoke, no smell,.. it just wouldn't switch on :/

Are any of your fans connected directly to the power supply with a molex adapter? If you do, and they're not spinning the PSU is probably kaput.

You could also look up beep codes for your motherboard in it's manual or online which should tell you what a long beep means.

i thought a long beep was ram problems try removing all parts and see if it post's to bios. then add parts till fail, also reset cmos.

NO motherboards dont matter for AMD uses, i say that because there already choosing to run slower if every FPS matted you would be on intel

That said...... there as been some testing by a different shop so i cant link you but it did show with all the same high end parts and just a different board there was only a few frames per second difference in games, and i mean like 2 to 5 FPS max difference. it was a £300 board vs a £70 board but all items was running at STOCK. IF you plan on overclocking CPU, RAM and GFX then a better board would get get higher speed but sill no need for a stupid £300 board on AMD.

Also just my 2cent. but if your getting at FX8350 and a new board why not get a new board and an i5.
8350 is a £150 chip, the same £150 i5 kill's it.
the boards are the same price you get what your budget go to.

Well i'm getting an AMD precisely because i don't want to buy a new mobo. Also as the next gen consoles will be 8 core amd,.. more games will utilize the cores etc. and it's cheap lol.

it's no cheap its the same price.

the next gen ps4 will be AMD and all reports are saying there HOPING game developers will jump on-board. but you should know 99% of games are made for PC then ported for console use.

Motherboards do matter with FX8000 series cpu. These cpu's tend to put a lot of strain on the vrms, especially if overclocking meaning you ideally need a board with decent vrm cooling, preferably 8 pin cpu socket and the more power phases the better. The 990x chipset is the most recommended on here for FX8000 series cpu's.

This is my mobo. It keeps saying for Phenom II or Athlon II, which is a bit worrying,.. but it does say supports AM3+, but can you tell me if that's okay for Overclcocking an 8350?

Cpu support list does'nt have 8300 cpu's on it. It does have the 8100 though so not sure if a 8300 will work.

As to overclocking, it has no heatsink on the vrm's so they are going to cook when clocking a Piledriver as they really load the vrm's up. You could try to get a third party heatsink to go over them, especially as it has the holes for a heatsink. Something from Thermalright or Enzotech might fit. Alternatively, you could try placing ramsinks on them but you will probably need a fan blowing at them as well.

The 8300 series processors will not work with that board I am afraid so a motherboard upgrade is on the cards. As for the 8 core amd vs 4 core intel argument intel is better even though it is true that the new consoles will use 8 core amd cpus does by no means mean that an 8 core shared resource sub par cpu will beat and epic 4 core intel cpu if anything it will just mean that the playing field a bit nothing more.
