Even more reason to go with three.
And it isn't just EU countries
So anyone traveling to these areas can get great deals

Be nice if they continue to expand this

Three has announced that it has abolished international roaming charges in seven countries.

The service is available to Three customers travelling to the Republic of Ireland, Australia, Italy, Austria, Hong Kong, Sweden and Denmark.

European authorities have been clamping down on roaming charges.

But Three is the first network to abolish them altogether, albeit in selected countries, where it has sister networks.

Three says customers on a pay monthly contract would be able to use their allowances of free minutes, texts and data with no extra charges for being abroad.

However, those on unlimited plans will be subject to some restrictions.

In a press release, Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director at Three, said: "By abolishing expensive roaming charges in select countries, we are allowing our customers to get even more value from their minutes, texts and data abroad by removing the fear associated with staying in touch while travelling."

Analysts say that other operators of mobile phone networks are likely to follow Three's lead, particularly those who already have a presence in other countries.

Lets hope the analysts are right and others follow suite.

Do three have sister companies in any other countries?

Realistically if this goes further we can expect the the rest of the big Euro 5 to try this, Voda, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom AKA T-Mobile and Orange.

For a list of their Operating Countries (OpCos) you'll need to look at their wikipedia pages really.

It gets a bit complicated for some really boring reasons but some countries can't work seamlessly with others even if they are owned by the same company (technical and political reasons often) but for europe this isn't too big of an issue.

Hopefully the proposed EU changes with regards to roaming charges next June will push this forward as well.

This is excellent news. We live in a global society now. Artificially imposed borders like roaming charges should just be banned outright anyway.

Saw this earlier, about time! Nice to see some genuine change from crazy data roaming charges. It was £8 a mb last time I went overseas.

So would this allow my friend to call home in the ROI from the UK within her allowance if she was on Three?
Close but no cigar :( Ending roaming fees doesn't equal "must allow x-boarder inclusive minute use". You'll likely pay the same fee for an out-of-bundle call.

Need to read the entire article not just the headline

I can't believe that they would allow unlimited data in all those countries.

Surely data is the cheapest thing to provide, as the partner provider can just provide access to the Internet directly, rather than SMS/Voice where it has to pass through to the UK provider.

awesome, does this mean I can go to Spain/France and use my 3 mobile as normal, as in, I won't get a 2 billion pound bill for a random app deciding it wants to do an update?

Now I have another reason to move to 3. I frequently travel to Hong Kong due to relatives. If only they had better coverage around some areas of the UK I usually travel to though, this is the only thing stopping me from changing to 3.

I wonder what these restrictions on the unlimited data packages are though?

Someone told me the UK is one of the FEW countries that bends over people if they want to use their phone abroad and that other countries have no such system. Is this true?
