Hi there!

I am building a desktop for a young lad (15yo). It's going to be his first pc, he won't play any hungry games as he's playing on xbox... So the pc will be for general and multimedia uses. His budget is approx 900-1000£ (but less is better) for everything, but he really wants a big screen (27"). His priority is fast browsing, multimedia and general usage. So I'm thinking 600£ for a full system without the monitor!

I had a first go with intel but now I'm leaning towards a base of AMD APU in a micro atx motherboard, wrapped in a micro atx case.

So here we go

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-6700 3.70GHz (Socket FM2) APU Richland Quad Core Processor (AD6700OKHLBOX) £119.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £84.95
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) HDD £74.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £65.99
1 x Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 micro ATX Motherboard £61.99
1 x Aerocool Qs-202 Midi Tower Case - Black £44.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020046-UK) £39.95

1 x Creative A60 2.0 Speaker System (51MF1635AA001) £14.99
Total : £625.60 (includes shipping : £23.20).

So What would you change ? Can I do better for this price ?
Thanks !

Looks good. I'd switch to these parts to save a bit. The A8 can be overclocked if wanted to give a bit more CPU grunt (not that it's really necessary for general desktop stuff), with the 6700 you're just paying a lot for a small extra bit of gaming performance. He might like Sim City, or you can sell it for about £15.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A8-5600K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor **FREE SIMCITY PC GAME** (AD560KWOHJBOX) £71.99
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PVI38G160C9K) £59.99
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler £26.99
1 x OcUK 20x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £13.99
Total : £184.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Why the 5800k over the 6800k
25 quid for not much difference in performance

and why a A75 chipset mobo over a A85 ?

essentially, not much difference.
a85x = you can crossfire your gpu, you lose that ability with the a75. other than that, nothing else.
and if you're considering a multi gpu setup, well, trinity is the wrong platform for that ;p

ie, save some money and get the a75
