I've tried searching without finding much (probably cause there isn't yet) but thought I would ask anyway.
Any ideas on release date and what socket it will use? Any other interesting facts about it?

No idea whatsoever. If you are interested in the APU variant, "Kaveri" it should be released Q1 2014 from what l remember. As for Steamroller FX, AMD hasn't released any information regarding release date and if we will ever see Steamroller on the desktop. :(

There are/have been rumours that steamroller will be the last AM3+ released but at this point it is what it is.. a rumour. With all the supposed changes to the architechure i wouldnt be surprised if it came out on a new socket.

I think there'll be a C32 Opteron variant, but AM3+ is getting a bit long in the tooth. It would make sense for AMD to pool resources around one socket family going forward, which perhaps is what they are doing with FM2+ and the inevitable FM3

AM3+'s base spec is more the problem imo, they need to sort out their baseline.

Otherwise we get the situation of supported CPU's throttling.

AMD needs to confirm it really. It's not fair for people to be spending out on the more expensive boards needed for Piledriver 8xxx/9xxx CPUs if they expect to be able to upgrade.

Well Given AM3+ and FM2+, AMD don't care.

We'll know when we know, and people will either respond in ignorance (As happens a lot) or they'll actually get annoyed.

Nobody should expect anything from their purchase other than it works with what it says it works with. Compatibility down the line is a bonus and only something you should count on if its promised or adverticed.

There's a general expectation though that Steamroller will come to AM3+. People can't buy £40-50 boards to run an 8350 or 9590 like they can with FM2 boards for any of the APUs.

I think i totally misread your last post :P. Most have been sleeping :) I thought you were having an issue with people may having to upgrade to a new socket for steamroller.

But in regard to this post i will reply the following. I would think since people buy the best amd has to offer that they will pair it with a board of quality. Otherwise it would be like buying a sportscar(no jokes here, stay with me :P) but only using a low grade transmission, it will break.

Interested in seeing some Steamroller based chips, Kaveri looks set to be awesome in the APU space, will we see big desktop chips though? An 8 or more core Steamroller chip could be tempting, all they need to do is increase ipc by 10% - 20% and also lower power consumption (Die shrink) and it'll be a really decent part. This is AMD though so I expect the plan to be excellent but the execution to be an epic fail :P Still no proper Steamroller info leaked this late in the year. The lack of hype makes me think it may be decent.. The last over hyped AMD chip was Bulldozer, and we saw how that ended up. Maybe the silence over Steamroller is a good thing? The quiet before the storm :p

AMD did state last year that there would be another CPU after Piledriver that would run on AM3+ but they haven't said anything about it since. A lot of people bought AM3+ boards with that in mind so I think it'd be very poor of them if they don't do it.

Yeah it's gone unusually quiet about Steamroller for desktop, I think this is a good thing. Like quiet confidence. Be good if they could become competitive again.

Hopefully, yeah. They haven't said anything to suggest they won't release Steamroller for AM3+ so it could simply mean there's been no change in plans. There's no doubt at all AMD will eventually move to APU only CPUs but I don't think it'll happen quite yet (there will be some form of Steamroller 6-8 core part CPUs I'm sure).

AMD will be busy making all the CPU's for the next gen consoles.
Desktop steamroller is probably very low on the list of priorities.

As to being competitive in the high end again, not going to happen.
They don't have the talent, resources or motivation.

I'd say I agree with you 100% if it wasn't for the talent part. While I can't disagree with you I can ask why you'd say that? Curious :)
