Xbox One Could Be Microsoft's Last Console

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/new...e-Microsofts-Last-Console#ohjzqPxFQpGVtShe.99

something or nothing?

well after reading some of the page from the link at the bottom of the page i linked i think its nowt

MS won't give up on consoles in nextgen+, they know full well if they hang in there, and just keep a good viewable presence in the market, Sony may well not exist to make PS5.

The Playstaion brand is doing well, but all those free games cant come cheap, and Sony's other divisions are failing. They made small a profit last year but only after selling something like £1.6bn of assets. They can't do that kind of thing again.

At the end one of the guys criticised the game for being too realistic... Meh ill wait for the reviews, 2x noobs wont be impacting my decision.

"Doesn't feel like next gen", then soon after "Too realistic". Just doesn't make sense, not when they are commenting on a hack-n-slash set in the time period it is. What exactly were they expecting?

Did they then go on to say Mass Effect 4 is too futuristic?

As you say, absolute twaddle, especially given the X1 (and PS4) have an expected 7 year life span at least. In technology I doubt anyone can see 2 years ahead with any clarity. Sounds like one of those articles designed to drive page clicks and notoriety.

As an aside although a gamble and unpopular here MS could ultimately get it right with X1. The wider gaming/entertainment market dwarfs hardcore gaming (as we saw years ago with the Wii). If X1 takes off in that wider market it could be an astonishing success with huge sales. It's a massive gamble for Microsoft but if they get it right PS4 could end up where the original Xbox was, seen as a niche for hardcore 15-30 year old male hardcore gamers (not a bad thing of course but a more limited market).

Xbox has always run second place to PS globally, if they've massively misjudged things this time they will have time to fine tune and reassess, it's not their only income stream, where as Sony can't really afford to get this wrong.

I know some really dislike MS and XO but you can't knock them for trying to do something a little bit different and the console gaming world would be a lot poorer if MS withdrew and left a Sony monopoly, I still shudder when I think back to the problems with Sony quietly putting rootkits onto PCs with games which I think is where my distrust and aversion to Sony probably comes from.

Well MS have got rid of the Kin, Zune and Surface is looking a bust at the moment, but the XB1 is not going to be anywhere near as much trouble as those. Xbox will always have its supportes and its place in the market, competition is good for us consumers but in the real world money is king and if the B.o.D. think its costing the company to much money then it will go. This goes for Sony and anyone else in any kind of businessm just i dont see how/why anyone would think this will happen with the XB1.
So whats worse rootkits on CD or sending all your info to the NSA?:p

So when the heck are MS going to announce a release date? Any more big shows ?

Well TGS is in september, but i doubt they would announce a date for a console they are not releasing till 2014 in that area. I still think Sept/October time we will have an X1 Expo thing, a bit like the may reveal to announce date etc. On a slightly related note has anything been said about UK TV on the XB1?

Think they've run out of big shows. My guess is they were planning on 29th Nov but with Sony announcing earlier for PS4 US release they're trying to work out if they have the stock and can negotiate to bring forward advertising/TV/distribution/retail deals to the start of Nov or not before they announce anything.

Well theyve still got another day of PAX havent they? I assume they need to relay what free game the US are getting sooner rather than later too...

ps3ud0

Nice to see some potential good new for Indie titles on XO.

Independent games will not have to adhere to a set pricing structure on the Xbox One. During an interview with Joystiq at PAX Prime, Microsoft's portfolio director for digital games Chris Charla said the ID@Xbox program, an initiative that will allow independent developers to eventually self-publish on Xbox One, will enable "every business model that any other game on Xbox One has." So ID@Xbox games support free-to-play, micro-transactions and premium pricing.

"On Xbox One, games that come through ID@Xbox are no different than any other game," Charla said. "They have full Gamerscore, full Achievements, can take advantage of SmartGlass, Kinect – if you can do it with an Xbox One game, you can do it with anything that comes through the ID@Xbox program. That's like a fundamental tenet of the program."
Shame self publishing won't be available until some time next year but it bodes well. This years indie hit dev could be 2015s smash AAA studio :)

Looking at past release dates it'll be late November but wouldn't that place them strategically behind PS4? Then again they did cancel the launch within some countries so I guess they are pooling stock for larger markets, which might mean a strategy to go ahead of PS4.

You could analyse this till your blue in the face and still be way off, I bet they'll confirm the release date randomly by a press release.

I feel Microsoft are leaving the release date a little late, surely announcing early as poss like Sony so people can plan ahead, book time off, get money together, get people excited, get more pre-orders etc would benefit them, its almost feeling like there not ready yet and not very reassuring.

Its more than 2 months until it releases they're really not leaving it that late

I feel Microsoft are leaving the release date a little late, surely announcing early as poss like Sony so people can plan ahead Plan what?, book time off What percentage of buyers do you think actually do this?, get money together They know how much it costs and what month it's coming out, get people excited We've seen launch games, features, future games....release date won't change that, get more pre-orders etc Still 2 months to go and a lot of places have either stopped guaranteeing for launch day or are running shot would benefit them, its almost feeling like there not ready yet and not very reassuring.
