Hi Guys,

I recently sold my laptop on eBay. The guy who brought it turned out to be a Royal Marine who is stationed at the barracks in Poole.

Not really knowing how much it costs to send parcels I set the p&p for the item at £15 . I went down to post office to post it today and to my horror found out that it was gonna cost £37 due to the 'hazardous item' aka the battery and the fact it needs £600 worth of insurance. I've had a look at prices on the internet for a variety of couriers and they are all cheap and under £10 until you add insurance then they jump to around £40. My fault as I should have properly researched the cost of posting it(n00b moment).

Anyway, I'm in Southampton so I'm not actually that far away from the guy. I reckon it would cost £15-£20 in petrol and take about 50 minutes which is fair enough as he paid £15 p&p. I'm thinking it would be easier and cheaper if I just drove over there and dropped it off in person. I've got Wednesday off work and was going to go to Bournemouth with the Mrs so it works out really well as Poole is really near.

Only problem is how to actually deliver it!? I emailed the guy at lunchtime explaining the situation and saying I'd like to deliver it in person but no reply. I know he's deploying soon so wants the item by Wednesday which I can do but without getting hold of him I don't really know what to do.

I've spoken to my best friend who's in 2 PARA and he says you can't really just go up to the front door with a package, especially if you're just a random guy in a car. He says unless I get the guys mobile number and get him to meet me outside he doesn't think it will be possible.

Anyone know if it possible to just drop it off at a 'reception' or would require him coming out to meet me? Don't wanna drive up and have my car searched for bombs etc!

"He says unless I get the guys mobile number and get him to meet me outside he doesn't think it will be possible."

Pretty much I would guess, depends on who ever is in charge in the guard house but I can see them being a bit suspicious about packages.

I'm sure the guy will meet you outside.

You just need the Password, it is Allah Ackbar, you need to scream it quite loudly as you hand the package over as many Marines are deaf from shooting guns.

Tell him to tell the guard room that you will be dropping it of with proof of id. No issue at all.

Use advanced search on ebay.
Click contact information

Type his id and the item number

Wait for email

Useing phone number sent in email call him

The barracks in Hamworthy near rockley park?

Suggest you just meet outside as it is only a small area that is secure site really and there is public access up to the main gate.

I had hoped he would have replied to my email. I guess he's busy getting ready to be deployed. I'm sure he would do it but he may not be aware of my intentions and may not read his email until it's too late.

haha, How to make the evening news in one massive fail.

Tried phoning the barracks itself and asking?

I can't seem to find an actual number, just a number for Bristol.

Go to the main Guard Room at the entrance and tell the duty guard the situation..have ID and any paperwork relating to the sale and do not wrap up the Laptop. If you can get the chap to meet you or arrange a pickup at the guardroom all well and good, but you shouldn't have too much of a problem. (I was at RM Poole for a while and picked up stuff from the guardroom, although the security protocols may be different and the guardroom may not want to take possession, but if you are in the area anyway...)

Being an MOD site it will probably be the same as the RAF camp I'm on, the guardroom won't accept parcels for people, I'm guessing for security reasons (but also because they'd be taking responsibility for it safe keeping).

Best bet's to get him to meet you.

I've text the guy so hopefully he gets the text and replies. From the above two replies it's still not clear if they will actually take delivery so I'm probably only going to drive there if he's happy to meet me. Otherwise I'll have to send it via courier.

EDIT: He's just text back and more than happy to meet me :D

Cheers OCUK and especially Diagro :)

Couriers just get a temp pass from the guard room for MOD sites and deliver personal items to the registry.

There are no problems or extra charges at all.

Your local APC depot would probably done it for around 15 quid including insurance.

All other items for the base itself just get taken to the relevant department by the driver.

The passwords on all the dates have always been significant years of battles when ever I have had to enter military compounds. So 1066, 1945 etc etc

What was the colour of the guardroom at Poole?

lol - worst is when its the year of the battle the particular barracks is named after....
