Microsoft to buy Nokia phones unit

Google never made their own phone, all phones with X have been with a phone set producer. This is really just a step further, a bit like how Google now own Motorola and have produced the Moto X and that is not a bad handset for what is a cheap price.

I liked the surface, and if we see proper Haswell integration on Surface 2 I think it will be an even better product.

Now a Surface phone, well in the style of surface... I would like to see that :D

I mean, they do devices which they have partners to buy, these products are decent spec at incredible prices, the Nexus devices.

Which is different to what Google do with Motorola.

Reading a bit more it seems when Elop moves a lot fo the key people behind the Lumia series is going with him. THis could be very good!

I dont believe anything the Verge reports, they have been wrong so so so many times.

like what? And what site(s) do you read? That has been without doubt my favourite site since it was born. The best, most thoughtful and from what I can tell correct writing without over the top hyperbole or bias I've come across.

IMO of course but I think they're head and shoulders above everyone else right now.

There is no way, no way on this planet MS would have structured a deal to buy the WP side of Nokia whilst allowing Nokia to come back at them as a competitor with another OS without a serious time delay, I'm sure I've read 10 years somewhere. That would be one of the first conditions I would have stipulated and I'm just average Joe not a top level negotiator!

Plus to be fair Nokia will be either laying off or including all their hardware people in this deal. They've little to no need for them now so a company looking for a rebirth wouldn't keep these people hanging around for nothing.

I don't know, this is a guess but I think you'd end up surprised how much of Nokias business isn't mobile phones.

Stopped reading after this point.
It does seem they don't have the Nokia name though, so no more Nokia WP's then.

Doesn't seem quite clear yet. Lumia and Asha brands seem be taken but it isn't clear if the Nokia brand can be used.

Either way if they can use it they have only licensed it so the aim would be to replace it eventually anyway.

It's a shame as the brand is still strong in Europe - not sure how this will play out. I feel it would be a mistake to brand it MS but not sure what else they can do?

Lumia Surface etc, something like that and keep the MS branding away from it.

I think they have the rights to say "Nokia Asha", but not in the higher end smartphone lines.

Thats how im reading it but could be wrong.

No more Nokia smartphones....
http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/3/4688888/there-will-never-be-another-nokia-smartphone

As long as the hardware and software quality doesn't drop then the name is inconsequential.

Don't agree, why pay for a 10 year agreement to use the Nokia name, if you aren't going to use.

Much more likely Nokia phones will stay Nokia phones until they have a large market share. Then switch to ms.

Potentially it's a great thing especially if Elop becomes Ms CEO.
It allows better integration between so and phone. Hopefully Nokia department will now influence the is design/features/updates far more.

IMO we will still get Nokia Lumias and a MS surface made byte Nokia division. A copy of what google has done with Motorola.

Microsoft were only getting $10 per phone, buying out Nokia should increase their profits from each handset and hopefuly bring the prices down.

I think it's a 10 year licensing deal on the patent portfolio, which perhaps goes some way to explaining why Nokia cost MS half what Motorola cost Google because they were buying the patents not licensing them?

God knows, it'll become a lot clearer in the next couple of hours when the US wakes up from it's labor day hangover.

At a guess it could be exactly the opposite, that was a straight up $10 license payment. Now they'll have to manage inventory, much more staff, take the weight of any failures etc etc, see the Surface write off for an indication as to why this almost certainly won't make them more profitable in the short term!

good news for windows phone
two teams working together as one team on development / design / apps / marketing way better than the current situation

looking forward for September event

It was certainly a surprise to wake up this morning to all the emails about it. I think it was a necessary move, it means that there will be a lot more cash for marketing and the likes.

As for what happens with the products we'll just have to wait and see. Also means that I'll now be an employee of M$ rather than Nokia, which is a shame. I like saying I work for Nokia.

That's if I'm kept of course. They haven't said anything about getting rid of people, so hopefully they won't.

EDIT: People saying Nokia RIP... Nokia isn't going anywhere. The brand and the company both still and will exist.

Called it 2 years ago, and people called me paranoid. The good news for MS is that Elop got their stock value to plummet so the move cost them a relative pittance compared to what it should. If I were a Nokia investor I would be seriously angry and calling for a criminal investigation.

.

Being an employee of MS is good, everyone always raves about it and they hand out a lot of free products.
