Old games you'd like to play again but...

I bought a N64 recently solely for goldeneye but it was so dated, I enjoyed the maps and the themetune but it just did not do it for me.

I then bought a snes and love it, mario kart, mario world, etc are all epic and it looks good even on a 50" plasma

I did the same... what TV have you got though? I'm still getting issues with the SCART output where there's a sort of cross-hatch pattern. This happened on my old Samsung plasma as well. Maybe it's because it's a PAL SNES. :(

N64 and some PS games have aged terribly because of the super-low poly and low-res textures IMO. Good quality 2D still shines.

I'm not sure it is about games being 'as good as you remember' so much as games just getting dated. I tried to play Thief the other day, but just couldn't as it had dated so badly. No doubt it is still great though, but times have changed.

How did you get on with getting Thief to run? I played Thief a few years ago and I had to apply a number fixes one of which was disabling the other cores on my CPU because the engine didn't like multithreaded CPU's?

I play old games all the time and while they may look dated the trick to enjoying them is to treat them like any new game and give it time. Wing Commander 3, 4, Prophecy, Monkey Island 1 & 2, all Thief games, Tie Fighter are classics for me and just as enjoyable now as they were all them years ago.

I have been playing the Rallisport challenge games again and they are everything as good as I remember. MS really need to do a remake of them it's miles ahead of the crud Codemasters churn out.

For this very reason OP, I'm avoiding reintalling MOHAA:SH for the multiplayer. Possibly best left as a fond nostalgic memory.

I downloaded some HD mods, and widescreen fix from Moddb(this is the steam version btw) and ran it in compatibility mode for windows xp, I believe. It ran fine, but it was the gameplay that hadn't aged well tbh. Same with Thief: Deadly Shadow, it still looks really good, but you know you are playing an old game.

I was trying to get in the mood for the reboot, out soon which looks pretty epic!

MOHAA probably is one of the games that suffers. I remember playing it and having great fun. But with the advent of CoD I can imagine it's very clunky (no aiming down the sight for example)

just a LG pg3000, nothing major, I am playing through the RF cable though so no problems, I have a CRT upstairs and its great on that.

The Snes is still a great machines

I tried Populous the other day, remember it being so good. Loaded it up, thought WTF how does it look so awful and promptly quit.

OMG.. I remember DD2 - "Death Bowl" I think the map was that I liked. So much chaos!

Best part of DD2 was you could just pop it into a CD player and listen to the soundtrack.
One of the best things about most PS1 games and is a feature that needs brought back.

Agree about the first two Populous games, although Populous: The Beginning is still pretty good imo.

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II - It's not that old but I can't get it to work :\

Anarchy Online, but I just can't get past the ancient character models.

Havent they just released a new graphics engine?

If we could go back in time, I'd love to play release DAOC.. and UO to a lesser extent. I still play 'classic' pub15/16 UO, so that's not such an issue.

As for single player titles, the Wing Commander series.
