i7 4960X review

Never understood why people went x79 for purely gaming. z77 and z87 i7's are perfect.

Yeah but remember two years ago at launch Sandy -E was amazing, awesome performance. People bought it because Sandybridge was a massive step up. Two years forward and now Ivy -E very little has changed. So much so that the mainstream Haswell platform looks like the better option.

Haswell -E will be worth the wait, just skip Ivy -E. Be interesting to see if Intel put up 16nm chips against Haswell -E. I think they won't want to cannibalize the high market.

AMD have a perfect opportunity to recoup some lost ground here. Launch Steamroller and be a decent improvement..

I notice that all of these reviews are using the new Asus motherboard.
It is possible that this is holding back the overclocks.

There is also not very much about memory speeds. Most mention that 2400MHz is easy and 2600MHz should be possible. So this is a major plus.

I cant remember which review I read but it stated that the new Deluxe was a really good mobo and got a 3930K @ 5.0Ghz.

I think I made the right move downgrading to a 4770K setup from X79, saved a few bucks, and Ivy -E really doesn't seem very good. Certainly not worth the extra cost over a 4770K setup.. Meanwhile I'm saving what pennies I can for Haswell -E, we all know that's when it gets interesting (:

Thats good to know! Maybe I have might the right decision too. What is the haswell E?

I can't help but feel that technology is being held back deliberately. Surely according to Moore's law (or a vague interpretation of it), this long after Sandybridge, we should be seeing some pretty incredible CPUs in comparison...

I remember when the next gen CPU absolutely demolished the previous gen... /Werther's Original

28nm reaching its limits for years, they've took the **** with 20nm, probably prolonged it on purpose.

I was considering the 4930x but went for haswell instead considering the savings- I would have needed a new power supply, more ram to go quad channel, and based on the predicted mehness I went haswell and got a gynormous ssd instead. Seeing the reviews I don't regret my decision!

Because mid 2012 it was possible to get a x79 board and a Core i7 3820 to the same price of a top socket z77 board and a core i7 3770k. I regarded the X79 as the better upgrade path back then and I don't regret it. Sitting with 3930K now and probably 4930K in a few months ;)

It's a shame Intel didn't go for an 8 core enthusiast processor, but I guess they have no incentive to do so given the lack of competition. On the plus side, I feel no compulsion to upgrade having read the reviews.

Well I guess we can keep our hopes up for Haswell-E though.

Really annoyed at this. i just spend £3k on a 4770K PC build, i wish Intel would have publicized this more

I am building a new PC in similar price range and I am choosing 4770k... I have had a 3930k twice in recent builds and it is meh for gaming. Don't be upset. Unless you wanted 6 cores over 4.

The 4960X will be £900 of nonsense bought by those who want ePeen (yes, I have been there before)

Exactly, gives me more time to put some money aside, I have way to many other financial priority's atm :p. Hopefully will have enough put aside for a nice 8 core Haswell -E setup when they launch :D

It's the 8 core desktop version of Haswell, more cache, no IGPU to worry about and DDR4 support. Basically Haswell -E is gonna be the mutts nuts :p
