I have some devices that I would like to stream my tv DVD box sets too. I have copied these to an external hard drive in their original format and I'd like to keep them in that format. The external drive is shared over the network through my apple extreme base station.

I would like to be able to easily stream the individual episodes to my android devices and eventually to my chrome cast.

How can I go about this given that I have to usual go through the DVD menus to get to the episodes?

With XBMC and the WD TV Live devices I've used the answer is to rip the individual episodes and name them in a specific way that the software understands as a series format. se01ep03 style is common

Here's some links giving further info:

XBMC

PLEX

BOXEE

Google Series Naming Convention for more info

By original format so you mean you have taken an Iso of the disc (menu of dvd intact) or have you ripped the separate episodes into their own files?

Using MakeMKV to convert each individual episode into an MKV file will be by far the easiest - you can do this without re-encoding the file (therefore losing absolutely no picture quality) and this will be a very quick task to do (as quickly as your machine can copy the files, essentially)

Then, you can make use of all of the library features of XBMC for example to present you with all the episodes in a great user interface.

I use FILEBOT to rename all my series it is awesome, i found that a lot of files wouldnt get picked up by my dlna devices, you just drag and drop them into filebot and it renames them all for you its awesome, once i renamed everything which tok minuites everything started to get recognised.

Since you've already copied DVD TV series on your external hard drive, but if you wanna stream to your android devices, you need to convert the dvd format to the formats supported by your android devices so that you can play them correctly and smoothly. so maybe a dvd ripping software is needed.

This looks like the answer I am looking for. Although there is still some manual effort in using the UI
