The stupid or just unlucky?

Lights and too close simple as

I was surprised to see so many without them on way to work

Everyone who rear ended imo is at fault as they failed to stop

ORLY?

Car ahead of you suddenly stops in 0.000001 meters because it's hit an immovable object.
Even though you've left the correct 2 second gap ahead of you, you've got brand new continentals and AP Racing 6pot brakes, you cannot stop in time. If the car ahead had braked at full power over however many meters you'd be able to brake in time, but not when he's hit a brick wall/arctic truck and stopped dead in his tracks.

Well not all of them were idiots.
Lives were probably saved by a quick-thinking lorry driver who used his truck to block the entrance to the bridge and stop more cars piling into the crash.

A driver involved in the incident, Chris Buckingham, told Sky News: "He was going the other way and ... he's gone down to the end of the carriageway, gone across the roundabout and actually blocked off the road so no more cars could actually enter the dual carriageway before the emergency services got there.

"Whoever that guy is I'd like to shake his hand because he's probably saved lives."

Picture from the front of it. Looks like one car just stopped for some reason and everyone else couldn't see them until they were already embedded in the boot.

Had been expecting something like this to occur with the fog. Plenty of idiots driving around in the mornings this week when it's been foggy and low light. Glad that everyone is ok, I'm sure some people here were driving completely appropriately but still got rear ended and then pushed into the wreckage in front.
I just can't understand why people don't slow down with poor visibility :s

It's a pain in the ass (pun intended) however at least they wont need to claim on their own insurance.

problem is insurance companies increase your insurance even if its not your fault. some BS about once you have had an accident (even not being your fault) you are statistically more likely to be in an accident again. this was acknowledged by some insurance companies on radio2 a while ago.

really thick fog in my village this morning. idiots with no lights on still. oddly 1 mile from the village it was clear as anything.

A day off work for them :D No boss could make them break the law.

@above, I know which is a pain, always ask you if you've been in an accident in the past x years.

from my experience its always silver cars who dont think they need lights when they are the least visible in fog.

the wife saw someone last year with no lights on in heavy fog (lady beetle driver with those silly eyelashes on) so she did that hand flash gesture at them. the car broke heavily and the woman ran out looking at the eyelashes. apparently she thought one might have fallen off! so my wife said to her she needed lights on and the woman replied 'but its not night time'

This is Britain and the precious queue takes priority over all else. Braking distance facilitates those who disrespect the queue and can not be tolerated. A 130 car pile up is a small price to pay to maintain the integrity of the queue order.

Well done people.

To be fair they are all swampys/inbred*... (That's what most of the local area have christened people that live on Sheppey!:o :p)

*For the record I do have friends on Sheppey and they are relatively normal.:D

I was born on the Isle of sheppey and I'm far from normal... :)

Maybe just me but speaks volumes for the safty of newer cars now that no one died outright i guess.

Not wishing this on anybody but there are way too many idiots on the road who seem to drive in the fog the same way that they do when it's bucketing down. On the A40 I've see idiots, where visibility is literally down to 25yards drive past at 70+ up the persons in front arse.

Read This

from someone I know

I came off the island this morning @ 7.15. The fog was very thick with cars and vans driving past me and I was doing 40mph over the bridge. As I was coming off the bridge the vehicles in front braked and I had plenty of room to brake safely but the vehicles in lane 2 started to brake hard as they was going faster than me with less gaps between them. Then we moved along after braking. By the time I reached the M2 the police traffic car was going the other way. A lot did not drive to the conditions even some had no lights on let alone fog lights.

You'd be able to see the object before they hit it and have plenty of distance/time to stop. IF you were driving appropriately for the conditions and leaving a suitable gap.

There's no excuse for it.

Probably had to make an important phone call (read - had to gossip to their mate for a bit).
