Best before data crisps

Best before doesn't mean anything I will happily eat a packet of crisp that has been out of date for months.

they won't kill you they just won't be as crunchy as they once were
Its best before not use by.

Best before just means...best before - they will taste better before the date but are still ok to eat after the date and aren't dangerous to eat. Of course if its ages after the date they will probably be disgusting but still "ok" to eat.

yea I know :P

TBH use by means nothing either it's how stuff is stored and at what temperature that is important.

I have milk sometimes upto 7 days past it's use by and it still smells normal and has a normal consistency for milk.

i'll bin it if I make a coffee and theres bits floating in it but until then nom nom

I once had a packet of crisps from a hotel minibar when I arrived late to my hotel in Spain.

Took one bite and had to spit it out, tasted disgusting. I looked at the date on the back and it was years out of date, which was especially poor given it was quite a fancy hotel.

Yeah, had to complain about it when checking-out.

Some mini-bars in fancy hotels are checked rigorously, which is why I was surprised these crisps were out of date. I was in Hawaii once and bought a pack of M&Ms from the hotel shop. Spotted they had some in the mini-bar fridge which were cold, so figured I'd just swap them over. I hadn't spotted though that there was about a 20 gram difference or something between packets, but you would barely notice.

Anyways, the mini-bar man came in not long before we were due to check out, he obviously inspected each item and found the 'rogue' M&Ms and left them out of the fridge and replaced them with the ones he had.

I think this might be the only time where the Americans are right about calling crisps 'chips'

I disagree.

If you chip away at something you don't take very precise slices at it, you take substantial chunks away. So what we (British) call chips is accurate. Crisps on the other hand should be crispy, which is what we call crisps are and what we call chips is accurate too.
