Hello,
I'm about to purchase a new power supply and hand my current one down to my girlfriend.

I'm very keen to gather opinions on 2 topics.

1. Necessity:
What components would one need to FULLY justify the purchase of a 1000W Power supply. Quad titans or 7990s OCed to hell?
A great way for me to judge what PSU is needed for what application would be for people to tell me what PSU they have and what power hungry components they're running on it. What have you got running on your 600,700,750 or 850 Watt PSU.

2. Brands and the concept of quality:
I notice a huge amount of love for corsair in build logs. I'm wondering if there's any REAL difference in power output and reliability between the beloved corsair & the much cheaper offerings from well known companies like OCZ, EVGA and Cooler Master. Any opinions?
(Didn't mention XFX because they seem to be just as expensive as the Corsairs and I think they're kinda ugly)

If anyone's interested, this is my personal shortlist. Anyone know a PSU that they think I should be considering? My favorate 2 at the moment are the very well priced corsair 750W CXM750 and the EVGA supernova G2, well priced for a 1000W and hasn't skimped on efficiency.

750W:
Corsair CXM750W @ 68GBP (Semi-modular)
OCZ-ZT750W @ 80GBP (Full-modular)
Corsair HX750 @ 106BGP (Full-modular)

850W:
OCZ 850W ZX @ 122GBP (Full-modular)
Corsair AX860 @ 156GBP (Ful-lmodular)

1000W:
EVGA Supernova 1000W G2 @ 145GBP (Full-modular) (Free cable bag OMG)
OCZ 1000W ZX @ 147GBP (Full-modular)
Corsair HX1050 @ 191GBP (Full-modular)

(Can anyone explain the incredibly high price of Corsair's HX series to me? almost 2ce the price of the semi modular equivalent from the same brand just for full modular? is there an increase in efficiency from the cheaper Corsairs?)

We like quality power supplies made with quality components because it is less likely to fail, but if it blows it won't take out half your gear with it. Cheap ones will (and have with me)

I swear by Antec units (some of which are rebadged Seasonics)

People mostly over-estimate their needs. A quality 850w will run pretty much anything you throw at it, other than tri / quad titans

Thanks for your input, I'll take a look at Antec PSUs thisevening. I was unaware seasonic and Antec were connected.

As for needing a 1000W I probably never will, but a decent 850 watt still seems to be around 100-120 pounds, with 1000watt at 140odd I just kind of feel like why not.

You also have XFX, they are Seasonic internals too! Another suggestion would be Silverstone.

My personal choice would be the corsair ax860,had corsair psu's for over 6 years now,not one has let me down and there customer service is one of the best.

I like the corsair psu's and they are well constructed but most people swear buy the seasonic ones.

As for power need corsair have a tool on their website to estimate which psu you need.

The OCZ ZX 850W is a quality PSU. I bought mine from OCUK after members recommended it and seeing some impressive reviews. Corsair, Seasonic and XFX are other brands I would recommend.

I'm also getting very attracted to the corsair range the more I look. The little 750W semi modular seems likes unbeatable value.

Took a look at Corsair's PSU calculator thing now. recommends AX860 & HX1050 for my planned system:eek:. think they maybe overdo it a bit to get people to buy more expensive products? maybe I'm just being cynical.

Thanks, really great to hear some good things about OCZ. Will take another look at XFX's range. I used to be a huge fan when they made Nvidia gpus.

The Antecs are fantastic, its what 8 Pack uses to bench apparently.

Hmm, nice to know. I read that review. At a brief glance the Antecs seem veeeerry expensive, probably quite far out of my price range, but I'll take a look at their whole range.

I'm still very keen on the EVGA supernova D2 (http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=120-G2-1000-XR) Anyone have any opinions on this PSU or EVGA PSUs in general?

Have a look at this site. It has all the main psu brand's listed, the manufacturer (most brands do not make their own psu's), the power available on the 12v rail(s) (some psu's, especially the cheaper ones can't get near their stated outputs on the 12v rail) and links to reviews. It's regularly updated so is a good source to have bookmarked.

Do not skimp on a psu. A good one will last through many upgrades so it's best to buy the best one you can afford. The Corsair CX range are cheap(ish) because they are little more than a budget psu built down to a price using cheaper components. Personally i would never use one in any rig that i built.

Hmm very interesting site, wish I'd had this before my last 2 days of pretty intensive PSU research.
I have pretty much settled on the EVGA Supernova G2 I've read reviews by a few people who tested it extensively with some very impressive monitoring equipment. It only has a single 12V rail but reaches it's stated output at any load and temperature.
Strangely enough that site you linked me to states that power supply has an 80+ platinum certificate when every other source I've looked at while researching this PSU says it only has a gold.

Yeah, I decided to spend quite a bit, it's one of the few components that don't age.
I'm not very interested in the CX range any more. Last night I was only looking at wattage and price and comparing the 2, when I was doing that it looked quite attractive. I have since learned to take many other factors into consideration :)

Both reviews say it's gold so the database must be wrong. That's the first mistake i have seen on it. No doubt it will be updated soon. What components do you have as i doubt you will even need a 1Kw psu?

Hi,

we have both certifications at the 1000W section available a G2 which is the Gold one and a P2 which is the Platinum one.

The Platinum one is also a semi passive one and do not run the fan till it hits a certain amount of degrees so it is super silent in Desktop or 2D use.

Cheers

Nah, my current build probably wouldn't even need a 750W, however the price increase is minimal, and I'd like this to be the last power supply I ever buy for my own PC (bought 3 in the last 2 years), So I thought I'd get something powerful enough handle anything I can throw at it and with a good warranty. Plus I really like evga and I think it looks pretty :)

Thanks I was aware :) the P2 is a little out of my price range unfortunately. I was just commenting about the site linked, they recorded that the G2 had platinum efficiency. Thanks for the little sales pitch but I've made up my mind :p Big EVGA fan by the way :)

Nice to hear this!! Just wanted to make sure there are no missunderstanding as there have been some since we released the Platinum model...

If there is any issue or question about the power supply feel free to contact me

Sounds like you've already made your mind up, just a note to say I have the Corsair CX750M and it's "OK"

It does what I want and it is what it is, for the money - however if you wanted to start going dual GFX and custom water loops you would need to upgrade the PSU - not in terms of overall power capability but more in terms of consistent load and amount of available power connections.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I'm sure the CX750 is a perfectly fine PSU for it's intended purposes. I am however planning to go dual, or maybe even tripple GPU in the next couple months, so I want something that's gonna be a monster.
