I have stayed in Gullivers Lodge a few times and cannot recommend it enough. It is not so much a hotel, but a posh B&B with a cracking host. It is near the station so is within walking distance of the centre.

My only advice to you is take some confortable trainers as you will be walking a lot.

The Duke Hotel is also still on Secret Escapes (where we booked it when we went) with a 70% discount.

I stayed at a place called "The Inn at the Roman Forum" has actual forum remains in the cellar which is quite nice.

Hotel itself was fantastic.

I stayed at Two Flowers B&B near the rail station. Was about £30 a night for a double room and pretty decent.

We just walked everywhere, probably could've saved some time ( and wear on the legs ) by getting the odd Metro.

We stayed at B&B Hotel Roma Trastevere for a week in July http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/b-r...id=f131ff1e8902409ba80a07b7cda8c15bec27a0e4X1

Very basic room but it was very clean, air-con worked well and had free wifi. The best bits are:
Fall out the door onto the tram stop, 5min into the centre that runs every 5min what seemed like 24/7 (never checked as we where always back around midnight but you could hear the tram passing if you left the window open)
* It was very cheap
* The food in Trastevere is excellent and not the normal tourist trap stuff you get on the other side of the river
* The night life in Trastevere is where the locals go so probably better than the tourist clubs
* The train stop to the airport is 300m down the road

I would recommend getting the 3 day travel card from the little new kiosk things on the corners of streets, that will let you use the tram, bus and metro whenever you like which is handy if you plan on visiting the Vatican

ETA link not working

We stayed at Hotel Best Roma last May. It was simple but comfortable, breakfast buffet was good and staff very pleasant. Near to the station and a short walk to the sights. We walked everywhere from the hotel was very pleasant. Also a supermarket just at the end of the road if you need that sort of thing.

Have a nice time, lovely city.
