Don't get me wrong; Yes, it will play Blu-rays, and yes it will record in DVDs. But it does this because it's already a Blu-ray recorder (hence BD player too) rather than being a DVD Recorder that can also play Blu-ray discs.
What the OP is looking for is the modern equivalent of a VCR with Quasi S-VHS playback. Sadly, I don't think it exists. That's a shame really because, after thinking about it, it is a product that actually makes sense.
I'll be honest, at first I dismissed the idea. Then I thought about what you can actually record with a BD recorder.....and it isn't much. You can't record from an external HD source such as a Sky HD box. So that leaves just the internal tuner(s), which in turn means a handful of Freeview/Freesat HD channels. The rest is SD sources unless one dubs from a camcorder; Does anyone do that any more? Having an SD DVD recorder capable of playing Blu-ray discs as well as DVDs does kind of make sense.
Unfortunately I can't point mogwai in the direction of a solution. It would take a general public with a bit of vision to really appreciate the benefits of such a device. However, since Hard Drive recorders are pretty ubiquitous we have got out of the habit of recording on to removable media. There-in lies the rub. The "conventional recorder" market is shrinking.
I had a feeling you were going to say that, but then I've been out of selling gear like this for 12 years now & I probably didn't read the OP properly (as usual)
