ESD noob

OK so I'm in the precess of building my first computer, and I have seen many threads about being careful of ESD, All my flooring in the house is carpet and I don't have an anti static wrist strap, so I came up with a crazy plan and used my old PC side panel which is aluminum and took my socks of and used that as a standing surface, I also touched the radiator from time to time, to earth myself, as you've already guessed I'm a complete noob with static, and just wanted to know if what I did would minimize the chances of static build up, or was what I did completely wrong, thanks

I only ever touch the bare metal of a radiator every now and again or leave the psu plugged into the mains but switched off and I've never had an issue in over 10 years.

Thanks for the reply, so you leave the PSU plug in the mains with the switch off and the rocker switch off on the power supply?

just use the old skool trick of touching a rad in your house (not a watercooling rad) as its cross bonded so will get rid to the static build up on your body
