I am after a new monitor 14" or 27"

If you are mainly playing FPS games then a 120Hz (or 144Hz monitor) may be worth considering.

As well as the BenQ XL2420T suggested by Shadz, the BenQ XL2411T and ASUS VG248QE are worth considering. Here is an excellent review which compares the two.

The 29in monitor you mentioned is a really nice one and the high resolution and massive width really will help for immersion. Plus the IPS type panel it uses looks fantastic, with its accurate colours and wide viewing angles. That said, they are "only" 60Hz and don't have quite as good responsiveness or low input lag compared to the 120/144Hz monitors mentioned above - so in fast paced FPS games these large monitors fast motion may not feel as "fluid" compared to the 120/144Hz ones.

Also, if you do have your heart set on a large, high resolution, IPS panel monitor - you may want to consider a 27in 1440p monitor (like this ASUS or this Dell).

27in may sound worse than 29in - but the horizontal resolution is the same (2560 pixels), but the vertical resolution is fair chunk higher (1440 pixels vs 1080). This means these 27in monitors use more and smaller pixels, plus they offer move vertical height - which can be very nice to have in many games/apps (including FPSs). Also, the viewable area of a 21:9 29in monitor actually slightly less than the viewable area of a 16:9 27in monitor - due to the difference in aspect ratio.

If I were you I would spend £500 on the monitor and £350 on the gpu if you want to go 1440p.

If he is going 1440p then he'll need the extra performance a high end card would provide. Personally I'd meet somewhere in the middle.

Either way, now is not the time to buy a graphics card. I'd get the monitor first and see where you stand with the remaining funds.

7950's are great cards, especially the Ice q boost as it will exhaust heat out the back.
AMD will be releasing new cards soon so maybe you could buy one and wait as they may drop the price down a bit and then get the second to xfire.
Or just buy now.

I have always lost money buying graphics cards, its a hazard of computers

Well yes, older cards devalue over time and then quite a lot when a new generation comes out. However buying just before a new generation of cards are released is a surefire way to lose money.

If you have to purchase now, then silk300 suggestion of buying one card now and then a second when the prices drop would be a good move.

I think buying a HD 7950 3GB card would be a pretty good idea - they have just recently been dropped in price - so you can get one with a nice cooler and a good warranty (like the IceQ mentioned above or the MSI FrozrIII) for under £200. The 3GB VRAM among other things makes it a really nice card for running games at high res (particularly if you plan on getting a second one later).

Plus you also get a bundle of nice games with the card, its a pretty good deal overall.

It is true that buying at the end of the generation isn't ideal - but if you NEED a card now then I guess you can't wait and considering your situation a HD 7950 would be a nice pick.

If the HD 7950 is a bit expensive for you at the moment - then a HD 7850 2GB would be a good bet. It is rather powerful, sports a decent amount of VRAM and is only £135. Plus you could always sell it and take a small hit after the new generation of cards lands.

its not expensive mate, I just want bang for buck and wanted a card or 2 to match a monitor
