Over 200k applicants so far for a one way trip to Mars. Successful candidates will train together in teams of four for seven years. The actual trip will take around 7 months departing in 2023. The twist is that the whole thing will be screened in some sort of mega reality show broadcast around the world. Sounds like fiction right??!

Who would have the balls to do such a thing? Can't imagine much of an existence awaits them. What happens if they go crazy and turn off the cameras? There isn't much they can do about it!

I know one thing if and when this finally happens I will be glued to it

Funny you mention tht, Bas Landsorp is the guy behind this and was also the brainchild for Big Brother
 
I thought it was impossible that there is to be any life on Mars?!? Hence the launch of Kepler to find somewhere life could exist :s

Yes it is highly unlikely there is life on mars. There are however large amounts of methane that might hint at some sort of underground biological activity, but this is a long shot.

That isn't the purpose of mars one though. They are trying to establish a permanent colony. I'd imagine dependent on how this goes there will be subsequent trips where they will ferry more equipment etc.
 
Would be much easier to just drug them and ship them out to the Mexican desert into a prebuilt facility and pretend. Filming them of course. In fact thinking about it, this is exactly what's going to happen.

Might be able to spoof it for the viewers but Mars and Earth have different mavity (and pressure) so the participants would be a lot harder to fool.

Have you ever watched big brother? The sum total of the contestants IQ is barely 3 figures. I would think fooling them would take less cunning than thant of a trout.

Trust me you could put one in a sand pit and tell them its Mars and nothing more would need to be said.
 
The comparison with Big Brother is coincidental. The contestants for this will need to train for seven years including regular periods of isolation. They will need to be able to carry out construction, grow crops, electrical and equipment repairs etc. They will also conduct research on things like geology. They won't let just any idiot make the trip, I should imagine the selection criteria will be very harsh
 
There's allready a thread on this.

And I would leap at the chance, but I'm not made of the right stuff. I wouldn't pass psychological testing to start with, let alone any useful skills, languages etc.
 
One way so you will never, ever be able to return? You would leave everything and everyone here? why would you?

To be the first person to live on another planet, the adventure, the excitement, the legacy.

Nothing different to when people left on foot or ships, to colonise the world, never to return, except a lot less chance of dying on this project.

I'm guessing they're going to try and start a colony - but man, looking up/down/at the earth wouldn't you think, I wonder what's going on back on earth? Being stuck on a desolate rock for potentially decades (if all goes well and you survive) sounds like hell to me.

I think you either have to have nothing to live for on earth, or be so dedicated to science and exploration that you would sing up to this. Both brave and tragic at the same time.

Those that first explored, knew they'd be able to go home (in general).

I'm not enough of a glory chaser to want to be one of those!

I have too much I hold dear here at home, but I'm too young (only in my 30s) to feel I'd want to do this - I have too much to lose.
