Hi guys,
Just bought a new motherboard and might be fitting in a Corsair H100i with a i5 3570K. I have currently got a 7950 crossfire setup and am wanting to overclock my CPU a little more due to Bottlenecks.
I am currently at 4.5Ghz but am hopefully looking to increase to 5.0Ghz.

I have watched numerous videos, what is the best method in doing this, Hammer and Vice or Razor Blade?
I will check my temps with the H100i before doing this, will it be possible to practice this with an old '05' Core2Duo 6400?

Tom

the older chip could well be soldered on, meaning you will destroy it and it wont be indicative of how your chip will react.

i used the vice method and it worked fine. just have to go for it man!

Okay thankyou, as I can see from your signature, do you not put the IHS back on?

Tom

I havent no. thought i might as well go the full works and bare mount it. which was also scary. pressing the power button for the first time!

also, do yourself a favour and use coolaboratory on the die with or without the ihs.

i used mx4 on the die and the temps were worse than with the ihs on.. even after 3 remounts. not sure if ivy would be the same but there you go.

i cant answer that im afraid.

my waterblock went on no worries, but i wouldn't like to guess. i assume some others around here have done it though so hopefully one of them can say.

I have both a H100 and a H80. I think the H100i uses the same mounting kit, and If so I would say no, as the stand-offs have a maximum amount you can screw down the cpu block, and as such may not make proper contact with the exposed die.

I could be wrong though, there might be some give. You could always try and see if there is contact, and if there is and you are confident that there is enough contact for efficient heat transfer, turn on and go into bios, check your temps, and take it from there.

Good point, I will take a look when it comes to it!
Thankyou guys!

Let us know how it goes! Iv'e been playing with the idea of doing it to my 3770k and putting it under water to attempt 5ghz... but I'm not sure if I have the balls to do it, as I couldn't afford to replace it at the moment if I cocked up.

Same! It is worrying but for that extra performance it is worth it.
Thing is, I am wondering if 5.0Ghz would be achievable as anything under would it be worth it?

Tom

I wouldn't bother TBH, your 4.5 overclock is not a bottleneck in anything but 3Dmark, if there is something holding your GPU's back it's the fact you only have four cores. Selling the 3570k and picking up a cheap 3770K will net you more gains than a higher clock with crossfire.

The 3570k wont be a bottleneck in the majority of games, bf3 and crysis 3 are ones that benefit from an i7 chip with sli/xfire. The former being a game ive played using both 3570k and 3770k.

I am keeping an eye out for any cheap 3770K's as I have only had my 3570K since January. Fine with sticking with my 3570K until the time comes!
To be fair the time it takes, Haswell-E comes out late next year with 8 Cores!!! :p

Looks like I will not be getting the H100i now, has anyone bought a Refurbished H100. Just wondering what they are like?
Also do you guys reckon a Hyper Evo 212 will be able to keep up with overclocks over 4.5Ghz?

Tom

Depends on what voltage you need for higher clocks. I have a 3770k at 4.5 GHz with a 212 Evo as well. I need about 1.24v for 4.5 GHz and haven't really tried running any higher for 24/7 use (though I've ran higher for benchmarks).
