I'm guessing they're going to try and start a colony - but man, looking up/down/at the earth wouldn't you think, I wonder what's going on back on earth? Being stuck on a desolate rock for potentially decades (if all goes well and you survive) sounds like hell to me.

I think you either have to have nothing to live for on earth, or be so dedicated to science and exploration that you would sing up to this. Both brave and tragic at the same time.

Sounds like a Hollywood film.

To be the first person to live on another planet, the adventure, the excitement, the legacy.

Nothing different to when people left on foot or ships, to colonise the world, never to return, except a lot less chance of dying on this project.

Thats not really the same thing.. To me anyway.

I for one wouldnt pick the 3 above for my life, friends, family right now. I'll stick to watching the live stream and wishing i was their, rather than looking at the earth and wishing i could return home.

Or people who want to do something with their life, a lot of us no longer want to raise a family or be tied to a desk and earn millions. This is a way of filling that more tradition human feeling of achievement. Although its not that untraditional. Plenty of explorers, adraniline junkies etc.

You think explorers chose who they went with? Most of them didn't.

In all honesty. Yes, i thought they would have been able to pick their crews.

They may of not had the chance too, but hope was always there.

If a crew is picked, how do they all decide who they go with, they're crew they get hired, they don't chose who's on the group. The one at the top, or the financier decides. I can fully understand why plent of people wouldn't want to go, is it really that hard to understand why many of us see the appeal of exploring, being the first etc.

Im not struggling to understand at all. I totally understand although im just stating why some, may not like the idea.

Indeed. It is exciting though - but it is something I'm happy to watch with hope rather than take part in.

Oh absolutely, there are some people that will suit this perfectly. I just hope they get the right people.

If there was a return trip it's something I'd consider, 1 way is just too terminal. Cabin fever, lack of meat, lack of exercise, lack of choice of women (I'm assuming I was single for this), lack of being able to have a family, lack of friends and leaving my family/friends behind, being enclosed in 200m² space is just too much for me.

However, there are some people that will cope fine.

The dangers aren't the thing putting me off, it's the social aspect and sanity that does!
