Mars One

I thnik the novelty would wear off pretty damn fast when the reality and finality of the situation truly sets in.

The ones who are chosen to go will have to be strong minded and fully understand what they're letting themselves in for and what will be coming. They'll know before they go that they'll be living alone on a desolate planet for the rest of their lives with no prospect of returning. The people who would go nuts when they finally realized what they let themselves in for won't be going.

I guess so. They'll have 7 years of training to get that drummed into them at least.

Tbh, in this case, mentally strong could also equal mental depending on how you look at it.
The price they pay for being pioneers is a life sentence in confined quarters on a barren rock.

Still, worked out fine for those guys on LV-426 :p

I'm all for one getting knocked up there! Natural birth to the extreme, no doctors to help you then...

I'm guessing one of the first four will be a doctor, at least one an engineer/technician and one a scientist to oversee any experiments etc.

7 years training, I expect they will all have specialist and all be multi trained to a lower degree than the specialist.

It can't be much different to any other selfless act someone has done. What people have sacrificed in the past could be benefiting you in ways you won't know. What they do may well help pave the way for future colonisation and advancement of the human race.

Like I said, the price they pay for being pioneers.

ED: I think you may be romanticizing it slightly. I doubt that most people applying for this are doing it out of some self sacrifice for the sake of humanity type of thing.

Yes it will take a very specific personality to go through with this. Fascinating stuff!

I don't see how people can make that type of show from this. It's a science mission!?

I'd just hope that if I was stuck with three others I didn't like, that I was to finish the journey like Prometheus, except to earth, not the next planet ;)

Ingenious way to raise necessary funding though

Possibly, I hope it does succeed, but I doubt it.
Tv producers/channels are to conservative. The money is clearly there, but trying to get it out of a sector that generally only backs proven concepts will be extremely hard.
Even the tech is there, they don't need to produce much new stuff for it at all.

Imagine if you had to procreate with a minger. :p

I'm guessing they're going to try and start a colony - but man, looking up/down/at the earth wouldn't you think, I wonder what's going on back on earth? Being stuck on a desolate rock for potentially decades (if all goes well and you survive) sounds like hell to me.

I think you either have to have nothing to live for on earth, or be so dedicated to science and exploration that you would sing up to this. Both brave and tragic at the same time.

i dont belive the mission timeframe extends to decades.

The idea is to keep sending four crew every two years, the plan is multiple decade.
But they realise that audiences get bored, tv figures even dwindled with the apollo missions. So once the base is set up, then they will start making money from comercial reserch. And each trip should get cheaper anyway.
