So my tired Athlon x2 system is starting to drag, and the lack of support for anything faster than SATA1 makes my Samsung 840 SSD sad.

I am pretty much clueless with the current hardware lineup, so I have thrown together this basket in the hope that I can get some input on the proposal:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £197.99
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £49.99
1 x Asus Z87M-PLUS Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £106.99
1 x Cooler Master Seidon 240M Watercooling System £89.98
1 x Cooler Master N-Series N200 Micro-ATX Case - Black £34.99
Total : £491.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

As you can see I'm looking at the best bang/buck ratio, with a little extravagance for a quieter cooler.
I am carrying over my MSI 5850 and 500W PSU. Any constructive criticism would be appreciated!

A few questions that will help us..

Is this a gaming machine?

Are you going to overclock?

Does it need to be mATX? Is size an issue?

What is your PSU (what brand and make)?

What res do you game at?

Thanks :)

If anyone wasn't planning to overclock, they'd be best off with the 4C/8T Xeon tbh.

for gaming, really?

I do game occasionally (at 16x12) which is really the only reason I need more CPU grunt, I have been holding off Bio:Infinite and a few others as it has been out of it's depth since games moved on from Source engine 2 (sigh).
I don't plan to overclock from day 1, but coming from a system with zero CPU overclock potential I don't mind spending a little to get back on that wagon.
I have been looking at mATX as I would like to have a more compact case and there don't seem to be many tradeoffs in shrinking things. I was actually looking at the MSI Z87I mini ITX board, but all of the cases seemed bigger than for mATX (go figure...).
The PSU is an old 580w Hiper Type R (I think), which should cope as my current system has a higher power draw and I have not experienced any problems in ~7 years.

Don't use a 7-year old PSU for a new system that has new parts worth of hundreds of pounds.

The risk isn't worth it. First of all, it is old and probably worn, and second, if it blows, it could take your whole PC with it.

Your setup looks fine. I am assuming you will overclock with that cooler, because otherwise there is no point buying such as expensive one. Though, if you game at 1600x1200 (Did I understand you correctly?) then you're building an overkill setup.

Probably a good idea, any recommendations? I think my current one only has a stby 5v of 2A, which would not be enough when using the switched-off USB fast charging feature with a couple of phones. I do like it for the silence though.

I thought the Hiper PSUs were infamous for being particularly dodgy.
7 years is a long time though. If you're putting it under decent load I'd probably replace it.

Think mine is 8yo, was thinking of getting a more powerful one anyway for a better gpu, but wasn't thinking it was a issue at all tbh.

I don't think I have ever put more than 400w on it, so it should last another few *BOOM* <user offline>

Thanks for the input guys, going to get this order in for the weekend.
