not this again... i have a strong hunch that the parents are involved in all of this... And that it will be the biggest scandal of recent times... How much have they gained from this?.. If I'm wrong my apologies may the people responsible come to justice...

Why not write a book about it then and see where it gets you....
I doubt they have gained anything. All the donations have been used to fund private detectives, awareness campaigns, investigations, legal fees, court cases etc.
If you think they were somehow pocketing money on the sly, that would have been reported and the media would be on them like vultures.
From the beginning its been about a couple who have lost their child to a kidnapper and haven't given up hope that one day she may be found, or at least an explanation to what happened.
If you take the view that its not as presented, then its more likely to be down to a couple of healthcare professionals who not only lost their daughter as a result of negligence and use of drugs, but it would also cost both their livelihoods. So may have been an elaborate plan to protect that.
It's never been about money.

I'm I wrong in thinking that they took payments for their mortgage or had a clause saying they could do that from the donations they took. I could be completely wrong on that just something I remember hearng or seeing in the news.

Do you honestly think that back when Madeline was missing, whether because she was kidnapped or otherwise and they had to hash something together.... do you really think they thought, ok, this is a great opportunity to make some money?
They are suing because what the detective has written is libellous and under law you petition against that in a court of law to protect your name. The damages will be based entirely on what their legal team believe is appropriate and think they can get. I'm sure a good deal of whatever is awarded and paid if they do win will go back into the Madeline fund.
It's likely the detective has made some money, but I'm his publisher is likely also responsible in part, so are likely to be involved in the court case to.
Finally, while Kate may have stopped practising, Gerry McCann is still a working Heart Surgeon. Do you really think they are that hard up?
Can't be that good. The McCanns still have broken hearts after all these years.
I think the notion behind that was they had spent so much time abroad trying to find their daughter, they didn't have an income from work and so paying the mortgage from the fund allowed them to carry on the search.
Whether that's right or wrong is a different question.
So its not about the money but they still want £1m from a former police officer who is most likely not going to have that sort of money and basically destroy his life and his name for writing a book about the way he saw things ?
Not once did I say I think they hashed something together or plotted something so don't put words in my mouth.
I just think its ironic for you say its never been about money then in this story they are trying to get a large amount of money from this former police officer because they don't like his side of the story.

Alright it was Geekazoid who originally said it was all about them going all out for financial gain.
As I already said, that money is likely to be what their lawyers have decided to go after, not just some figure that Kate McCann plucked out of the air. Also as I said before, the Publisher has no doubt made profits from the sales of the book, so its more than likely there is money to be awarded from somewhere. The whole point of libel laws is that you can't just go around spouting things that are gospel without any truth behind it. That's especially true of somebody who was a high ranking detective saying such things, yet failed to find anything to pin them as criminals.
They are suing to protect their name and stop the publishing of the book. If they get awarded any money by a court of law, it will go to their legal team and likely to their Madeline fund. They aren't principally suing just because its an easy source of money.

They definitely did it indirectly. They left her alone while they went out and enjoyed tapas.
