IBT and Prime 95 just really a complete waste of time!!! Silicon torture time wasting non- sense!! use your pc to test stability not this garbage, your temps running every day stuff will be fine.
But let's be fair here. Unless your world records are considered stable then they won't count (?), and running those tests you are putting it under stress. They can be used as indicators, which I think is fair.
They dont indicate at all if your system is stable for the tasks you do. Hence using it is a lot better and a lot less likely to degrade components that a clocker has pushed too far.
My benching is stable to becch. Your everyday user needs stability only for what they do. So just use it and see, adjusting from that reference point.
There will definitely be varying parts of the chip used for different tasks, so it is highly likely you are correct in a chip being stable for one task, but not another is true
I'm a basic overclocker, and I find using tools like that useful to quickly identify problems with an overclock. It can give me an indicator something isn't right. Sure it's not the be all and end-all but it's a start
You have to bear in mind that most (if not all apparently, your world championship sir!) will not have the level of knowledge you have, so will be looking to other tools as proof or validation everything is OK.
I'm still a complete noob when it comes to overclocking, but what I tend to do is run 3-5 runs of IBT or say 10-20 minutes of Prime95, just to pick up the really obvious instabilities and then I just use the system while crossing my fingers and hoping.
I do this for 2 reasons. 1 is to get an idea of my max temps while I can keep an eye on them (unlike if I was full screen gaming) and also because it's less annoying to have the system fall over doing IBT/Prime95 each time after making a few overclocking tweaks than to be part-way through one of my best ever rounds of Black Ops 2/Battlefield 3/etc. and have it crash on me then. I mean that could still happen, but hopefully less likely.
