just to let you all know im the biggest noob on here, this will be my 1st pc and 1st build, im still wary as ill probably put it all together and it will blow up when i switch it on lol but im going to TRY lol

i wont be using it for gaming, strictly picture editing, light video editing and astro photography stacking etc.

ive been told by several people the i7's onboard graphics will do me, then some people are saying im mental not getting a gpu..... at 1st my budget was only £400 now its up to 1k :( the mrs still thinks im paying £400 for it so if she finds out ill be on the street with no means to even plug my pc in :( so do i REALLY need a gpu? i see they range from £20 for about 1gb to £500+ for 4gb gpu's, would the £20 ones be better then my i7's onboard? again i know nothing and my list has been built with the help of fellow oc'ers on here and they have helped me out so much i could not be happier, but this is really the last decision, here is my list, i thought id ask in the gpu section to get a definitive answer on this gpu melarky.....

thank you sir! :D :D :D

what i5 would you personally go for and why if you dont mind me asking :)

thanks for the quick reply buddy :)

edit, just see your post david, what psu would you suggest mate :)

Hi tingting,

As you specified 'light video editing' then a strong CPU is good but but probably not so essential as to be worth risking your marriage over! Haswell i5's are very good CPUs - yes the i7 is better but it's an expense you wouldn't need.

With no GPU I'd be looking for a quality PSU but at a much lower wattage - for comparison I've got a higher power-draw CPU significantly overclocked plus a discrete graphics card significantly overclocked and I'm using a 520W supply with room to spare. You could probably get a 360W supply and be fine! I'd probably go higher as you may later decide you want to add on a graphics card -this wouldn't be a bad option:

I'm sure someone could suggest a cheaper alternative that would still be plenty good though, I only had a very quick look.

Just out of curiosity is your desk far from where the computer would be sat? Just noticed the 5 meter monitor cable in there. Or do monitors not come with cables any more? Been a while since I bought one.

hey david mate,

thanks for a details post :) i will look at all the i5's, that would mean id need to change the motherboard to match the cpu right

thanks for the info on the psu, maybe ill have a gander at the decent corsair psu's around the 400w mark then, i see you overclock to, i tried reading the beginners guide to overclocking on here but wow that stuff is like foreign to me lol let alone the advanced overclocking post lol, it seems everyone overclocks tho lol but its scaryyyy stuff man. ah yes that seasonic psu you linked to someone on the hardware section actually recommended that one a couple weeks back when i was putting together the list

no the pc will be sat on the desk maybe 30cm;s away from the monitor lol but thats the only size OC have in stock the 5m ones :( i did message OC asking if a dvi lead would come with the monitor but they said they dont know and would have to open a box to see so i added the only lead they had in stock which is bloomin 5m lol

thanks for your help david :)

very interesting, that monitor you linked says 2ms and the one i linked in 1st post says 5ms, does this matter? i dont even know what it means

also what is CUDA buddy? im liking the price of the gpu tho :D

but the most important thing is ill still be married haha, women just dont understand tech like we do loool she is non stop about deals on laptops as she dont want me taking up space with my pc desk lmao, but i cant stand lappy's/notepads any longer!!! if i never see one again it will be too soon :D

thanks for all your help, just waiting for my final pay slip next friday and i shall be ordering then will be swarmed in a ton of boxes and cables,

oh i do think what i have let my self in for lol im not the best with things like this but it will be great to learn and im very excited about putting it all together and actually knowing what makes up a pc instead of buying a pre built one like i was going to before i found this great place called OC looool :D

by the way whats the most a motherboard/windows 7 can handle in the way of HDD capacity? is it 2tb?

the fact is you can get away with an i5, personally i would buy a better brand of PSU. to be fair if you can go for an SSD as boot drive and a 1tb HDD you would be happy and laughing, and while technically you dont need a graphics card a 2nd hand one can be had for well under £100 and will cover you for picture editing, light video editing and astro photography stacking

1st ive heard of ips mate, so i take it the difference is that they are 8ms right?

If you're going to be video and picture editing, that SSD is not going to be anywhere near enough. you need a 1TB or 2TB hard drive.

i am not planning on using the SSD for storage, well i am in a way but only for O/S and programs, ive got a 1tb HDD on the list

i keep thinking do i want to drop to an i5, or just get the i7 to future proof me when i learn more, especially with overclocking, and the i5's dont have hyperthreading do they? thanks mate, ill probably more then likely be getting a decent gpu or 2 around xmas time, thats why i like desktops as i cant afford £500 on 2 gpu's yet but thats what upgrading is for, so i might just keep my original list in my 1st post with the overkill PSU,i7 etc and least ill be well future proofed right.

my mrs is well sly she went through my shopping basket on oc this morning! she did not take it badly tho, so i might stick to a £950ish budget

IPS in general are better for viewing angles & colour reproduction but worse for response time compared with TN (normal) panels. Bear in mind that a rubbish IPS will not have better colours than a good TN! IPS are more expensive.

I'd say this sounds good - bigger SSDs are of course nice but to hold all your files on SSD would be prohibitively expensive.

You can buy whatever makes you happy of course! That said, the best way to future proof a PC is to keep to a sensible budget so you can upgrade it later, not splurging on the best currently available. Likewise I'd not realistically aim to go multi-GPU in future when you're looking at no GPU at all just now. Multi-GPU setups are rare outside of enthusiast circles as they are mostly unecessary, power hungry, hot and more effort. Single GPU with selling/replacing with newer one works better as an upgrade path. Multi-GPU setups are undeniably powerful and fun though if you get into playing around with your computer!

Glad it sounds loike you're not going to get castrated over this! :)

NICE, I MIGHT KEEP WITH A BUDGET MONITOR FOR NOW THEN, AND THEN I CAN ALL WAYS UPGRADE IN THE FUTURE :)

YEAH I WAS LOOKING AT THE 1TB SSD;S......MY GOSH THERE EXPENSIVE :( THERE IS ALSO NO DATA RECOVERY IF THEY CORRUPT LIKE HDD'S IS THERE?

YEAH I DONT KNOW WHERE THIS PC PATH IS GOING TO TAKE ME IN THE FUTURE....I SAY I DONT WANT IT FOR GAMING, BUT I LOVE BF3 ON THE XBOX AND BF3/4 ON THE PC HAS 64 PLAYERS!!!!!:eek::eek: LOL

Glad it sounds loike you're not going to get castrated over this! :)

GREAT ISNT IT, I THINK SECRETLY SHE IS EXCITED TOO NOW NOT THAT SHE WILL EVER ADMIT IT LOL

It's the most exciting thing when all that kit arrives. You could save £8 by not buying water in a spray bottle btw. Other than that, I agree with the other suggestions to move the cpu to an i5 and put the difference into a better monitor.

ahhh i can only imagine at this moment, i think ill just drewl over all the boxes for a couple days looool

is that all it is.....water.....lol, ill take that off the list then :)

whats the main difference between the i5 and the i7 any way? is it hyperthreading?
