OMG 5p Charge for Plastic bags!

Been paying the tax here for a while now. I always forget to bring my own bag(s) so just accept the fact my purchase will be 5p more expensive.

My wife has a drawer in the kitchen full of m&s carrier bags, if i was to stand outside m&s, undercut them buy a penny and sell them at 4p each, i reckon id make enough for a pint and a burger at wetherspoons!!!
The thing is 5p for one bag or 50p for ten doesnt bother my wife or me.
We also have some of those fancy "bags for life" they are very good, a bit dearer but well worth the extra pence. These too are stuffed in a cupboard somewhere.
The problem is we, like millions of other people forget to take them with us when we go food shopping. When the wife tells me whe are going food shopping i go into "brain dead idiot mode" and she has such a hard time getting me into the car and to the store, plastic bags are the last thing on our minds.
If the goverment is serious about the "green" thingy they should help the supermarkets do away with plastic altogether.
They have been using paper in the US forever. Paper is much greener and can be recycled.
Paper is also very strong, i have a chippy and my potatoes come in paper sacks and always stay inside.

Oh wait.... paper is a bad idea because we would have to chop down loads more trees and thats not very green either and if my potato sacks get wet i end up chasing spuds around the yard all day. So you can imagine what it would be like for any shopper with food that slightly thaws on their way home....

The plastic bag has served us well for a long time and will continue doing so for years to come, why? Because there is no better way of getting your stuff from the shop to your house.

Everyone is treating this like a joke, I hope this is ok for the family forum? Plastic wrapped penguins and one is clearly hurt :(

My weekly shop just got 25p more expensive, this is going to cost me over £1 a month.

I'm not sure how I'll manage.

:D

I'm sure in bulk these cost less than 5p?
I use them at home for small tidying jobs where bin bags would be too large, now I'll have to find someone selling carrier bags in bulk instead of recycling the supermarket ones.

Other than the cost being passed back to me the environmental effect remains exactly the same?

I thought when I clicked the link it would show the thread start date as 2001.

I cant think of anywhere thats given free plastic bags for years.

I have one of those textile tesco bags and an Asda bag for life guess I'm sorted then.

what they should do is give you 5 p for taking the bags back

Whoever thought up this idiot policy needs a plastic bag putting over their head until they suffocate.

Stupid environmentalist - ****ing hate the lot of em.

Rage much ?

Nothing wrong with people who are concerned with environmental issues. We all have to share an ever decreasing amount of space on this planet so it makes sense that we should look after it. Or maybe you just want to live in a cess pit.

the carrier bags are the least of the waste from a shopping trip though.
almost everything has silly amounts of packaging so you can end up with a carrier bag of rubbish once you have packed everything away.
they should focus on reducing packaging and worry about bags after

Well finally in England we are going to be charged a fee for our plastic carrier bags, much like the rest of the civilised world and EVEN Wales has been doing it for ages.

Does anyone who shops not already use their own bags?
I hope they improve the quality of the bags for 5p. The last ones i got from Sainsbury were like 1 micron thick and split when i waved my cucumber at them. I digress, that's a whole 'nother tale for a later date.

Im all for charging for them at least this way the money can be used for environmental clean up projects, or to fund nefarious political agendas!!!

Been living life in a shell?

All the shops and supermarkets round here charge for bags and have been for about 2 years now.
