Found someone's holiday photos

Do all the popular image hosting websites strip out the EXIF data? Just wondering if there's a way to search for any photos online with the same serial number in the metadata.

It depends on the image host, imgur does. There was a story a while back of the win phone reddit where a leak was well, leaked and he uploaded the image without stripping the EXIF Data which lead to him getting fired iirc.

so someone involved in a crime steals a camera, goes to a wood and dumps any incriminating evidence, like family photos.

My guess is you were standing on their graves in the wood and you're now massively involved in an up and coming murder case. Good luck :p

Wouldn't the hotel worker then be the person holding the expensive kit, and more likely to be careful with it? :p Anyway, a couple of flash cards are hardly a fortune and very small/easy to fall out of pockets etc

The decent compact flash cards aren't really THAT cheap...

Just a thought though OP, don't all photos with EXIF store the cameras serial ID? Could try and do something with that

Would be handy if the OP could post the serial to give folks something to work with :D
Hopefully the VW dealership that sold the car will be able to help, after having a look at the advert on their site

subbed for possible good outcome..

Keep us up to date.

Same.

Definitely worth trying to locate them.

I've lost a camera on holiday (more like stolen I think) and lost a load of photos, would have really appreciated if someone brought it back!

Couple of suggestions from the Flickr accounts that I posted in.

http://www.camerafound.com/

http://www.stolencamerafinder.com/

Apparently the second link will search the Internet for any other photographs posted with the same exif info.

The second link came up blank, but I made a post on camerafound.com - thanks!

The camera is a Canon 5D Mark II and the serial is 2031301676. No reply from the dealership yet, hopefully they'll get back to me next week.

how fun is this thread. why wold you ever want to wipe the cards when you can do this and hopefully find the owners. makes a great story

The main reason I considered wiping them was the fact that tracing them would involve posting a lot of their details online, and some people can be very touchy about such things. I didn't want to get into trouble through trying to help! After the response on here though, I've decided to do my best to trace them, so hopefully it'll be a happy ending :)

A lady from Canon phoned me today and told me the camera had never been registered with them and they had no data on it at all. I haven't received a reply from the dealership either, so I reckon my best shot is identifying this hotel-type place. Will have a proper search around tomorrow: if anyone recognises it then do let me know. I reckon it's somewhere near Tursac, France, but I can't be sure

There are a lot of camper vans there, so i think we're looking for a camp site rather than a restaurant or hotel.

That plate doesn't look like any french number plate I have ever seen which just goes to show how things have changed since i was last there :-) </edit>
