Bought a faulty "Dell Inspiron 1564", need something cleared up...

So I bought this Dell Inspiron 1564. The seller said the onboard graphics is faulty.

So since this is an i3 model and the inter graphics are in the cpu unit, does that mean I can put another cpu unit and get it to work, or is there some chip on the motherboard that is referred to as the "onboard graphics"? :confused:

I actually already ordered a used cpu off ebay (waiting to be shipped), but I want to know what to expect.

What you guys think? Will the new processor make it work or will I have to bake/get new the motherboard :D
 
Do you know what model i3 the laptop has?

Edit: Just checked Intel (I thought some older model's did not have integrated GPU) but the 330m onwards does have integrated GPU, but it would depend if Dell allow the use on the onboard GPU, my old Dell with the i3 330m had a external AMD gpu which failed and I was unable to use the onboard one.

Maybe, maybe not. What the seller has identified as an iGPU fault could easily be a fault in the display out circuitry on the motherboard, the CPU could be fine. There's one way to find out for sure though, and you're half way there.
 
It uses the Intel Core i3-330M which has integrated GPU and as far as I know this particular one doesn't have the ATI onboard graphics. I think the ATI option comes with the i5 version of this laptop.
 
Dell done the i3 with the AMD gpu, as mine failed, Dell replaced the whole motherboard and used the original CPU and RAM , then 2 weeks later the laptop failed. Ended up with a replacement model.
 
So I went to the dell support page to see if I can find specific specs for this laptop and I think i did.

I don't see any reference to ATI, so I have hope :D

I guess I just have to wait for parts to arrive (which I hate).

Will update you on whether I get it to work or not.

In case you were wondering, I got it for 20 quid + 10 for petrol for the car :D and the guy also gave me some Dell mini PCs for free (Optiplex SX280, they need fixing though). I guess, even if I can't get it to work, I can sell it for parts on ebay and even make profit :p
 
Well the guy gave me 2 Dell Optiplex SX280s (which i will sell) so i guess the laptop is kinda free :D

I will just wait for the processor to arrive and see if that is the problem, if not, I will take the warranty and return the processor :D

Just FYI, these are a fairly large ball ache to get at the CPU. Board out, and pretty much everything stripped down, bar display assembly
 
I'm used to the laptops. My dad has an asus g2s which I bake in the oven every now and then because the onboard gpu fails. The dell was piece of cake compared to the asus one :D

Anyway, I took it apart and when i took off the heatsink I noticed a chip and when I got closer, i could read it and it had the ATI logo :(

Knowing that there was ATI chip onboard, I still installed the replacement CPU just to make sure. No luck. The screen is half white-ish and half black-ish with lines. So it is that piece of **** onboard chip :D

I'm sure if I bake the motherboard, it will come to life, but this is just temporary fix for couple of months and the amount of time between bakes decreases every time :D (as I meantioned with my dad's asus).

I guess the best option is to op in for the 1 year warranty.

I just need to know something. I didn't mention that the laptop didn't come with RAM and HDD. I currently have 1GB in there (bought for 2 quid off ebay so I can boot it and see if the gpu problem will get fixed with new CPU).

When I have to send it to Dell, would they expect it to have the HDD and does it matter if the original RAM is not there and it only has 1GB?

Should I order 4GB ram off ebay and some small hdd or not?

I never sent a HDD in with my XPS M1330, simply because they have been know to wipe stuff by "accident". That machine was in for a total of 4 motherboards, under warranty. Pretty sure that it came with 4GB and went back at least once with 8GB, besides, if they were being picky, they'd know what modules shipped with the machine.

TL;DR I don't think it's worth worrying about - send it in and try. I'd be a little more worried they would notice it's been in lots and lots of bits... Is there not a warranty seal under the keyboard just before you get the palm rest off (it's been a while since I stripped one of these)?
 
I didn't notice any seals anywhere, unless they were there and were completely removed :/

Can I demand my warranty money back if they refuse to repair it?
 
Update:

He finally got in touch with me over the phone. Tried saying I have to pay "reinstatement fee" because the warranty has expired back in 2011, but I hesitated and he realised I won't go for this :D Then he said "let me see if I can do anything better" and said he will take off that fee.

Now I have to hope all will go well when I send it.

How long should I wait exactly? (before requesting repair)
