It says 1360*768 is "recommended" but will go up to 1920*1080p.

It doesn't make sense to me that they would recommend you use a resolution lower than 1080p if it's 1920x1080 native though.

Are you sure it does proper 1080p?
My old Panasonic PHD8 was 'HD Ready' but the native resolution was 1366x768. It could accept 1080p inputs but would scale it back to the native res.
And yes, Native res would always look better because it tends to be 1:1 pixel mapped.
Got a Panasonic 55" VT50 with proper 1080p now, so it's no longer a problem but that old plasma served me well from October 2005 to the middle of this year.
