driving in america

I'm thinking about California for my holiday next year. Fly into LAX, then go to San Diego, San Francisco, Napa Valley, Chico, Las Vegas then back out of LAX. Probably looking at around 3 weeks altogether. How much would car hire cost? We like the idea of a convertible but if a saloon is much cheaper I'd just go for that. And what would the fuel prices be like? I recall a previous thread by Fox about this, but can't remember how much he said it all cost. I'd be very interested to hear about anyones budget so I can get a rough idea.

The trip is very much in it's infancy, but it's something I'm very keen on. I'd be 25.

Totally doable, you will pay circa 30 quid a day for a convertible so not expensive or much more than a standard car.

Been driving a Ford F150 for the past two weeks in America, nothing really to add as it has been said. Just that America and driving in America is fantastic! Remember to turn right on red ;-)

Tell you what else is great - being able to buy fuel from gas stations on the highway without getting conned. Same price as in the city. It seems it really is only the UK where service stations totally rip you off.

I dont find this to be case in california really, as low as $3.60(reg) off highway but pushing $5 highway or at large stations. Prices have risen so much here, $5 gas would have been unthinkable 5-6 years ago :(

Another driving tip. In LA, if you're more than 1 in the car, use the car pool lanes! They're normally the left-most lane and are usually free of traffic!

This works in other cities too, drove from south Seattle to North Seattle at 60mph the whole way in the middle of rush hour :D

I shall so a little post when I get back.

Currently in the middle of Yosemite and 512kb Internet!

I've not see fuel under $3.90 for cheapo. Max of $4.40.

We've done 600 miles and put in $80. The challenger is surprisingly good on fuel. Getting 28mpg so far over the trip. I've been giving it some too as I'm only used to a 1.6 focus :p

$4.40 in Yosemite? It was $4.65 at the end of July.

What are you checking out in Yosemite? It's an awesome place. If you're into hiking and you have a bit of time available I'd recommend Clouds Rest from the trailhead at the bottom of Tenaya Lake. In my opinion it was better than the view from Half Dome (as you can see HD!).

It's a shame some of the view has been killed off in the Rim Fire though :(

we are only here for a day so we have just been relaxing by the pool, driving to death valley tomorrow, google maps says 8 hours!

google maps is taking me over sonora pass highway but ive been told tioga pass is a must and it cuts across sooner than sonora so will save hours of time.

we are staying at tenaya ldge and going to furnace creek tomorrow.

I've got the pleasure of a Dodge Avenger. What a total turd. Good enough for Oahu, mind.

Had a Focus on Kauai and the quality of fit, finish and trim is appalling compared to the EU model!

Nice. Yeah, go back into the park and out via Tioga Pass. Probably take a fair bit longer and you may stop regularly for photos but it's worth it.

Enjoy Death Valley but be warned that California Highway Patrol do make appearances in the area, and there could be a few park rangers about.

Such a standard rental car. I've seen very few that aren't rentals :p

You only have yourself to blame for booking that class :p

Gas is 3.60 up here in Montana and Idaho.

God that's miles cheaper than California, if anything I would have thought that more populous areas would have cheaper gas as in the UK. Seems to be the opposite in the states

We have just booked a dodge caravan 3.6 v6 as we are 4 weeks in Florida in November , so will be keeping an eye on this thread as I have never driven in the states

NorCal seems to be more expensive than SoCal too, I had a lot of teammates at work complaining but they soon shut up when I tell them it's $8/gallon in the UK. There are some extremes though... I saw a station just outside Death Valley selling for $6/gallon :p

Fairly bog standard minivan but if you get to pick try find one with all the tech. I've rented a few in the last year, the Chrysler Town and Country (same car, slightly different body etc) was the most well kitted with Sirius and a screen in the front and back with DVD player and a rear parking camera.

Just arrived in Oregon where it's as low as 3.40 cash!
Incidentally it's illegal to fill your car in Oregon, all the gas stations have attendants.

The combined federal/state/local taxes on petrol in CA are about 35c/gallon higher in California than Montana.
