Evening all,

My mate wants a gaming PC. To a certain extent money is not a concern (budget of up to £4000). Windows and all other peripherals are NOT needed, it is just the tower.

This is what we have come up with so far. He wants a green and black theme to it:

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Classified 3072MB x 2
Gigabyte G1.Sniper 5 Intel Z87
Cooler Master Cosmos II Ultra Tower Case
Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell)
Corsair Professional Series AX1200 High Performance 1200W
Western Digital Caviar Black 4TB
Intel 335 Series 180GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive
Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Xtreme 360
LiteOn IHES112-115 Internal 12x SATA Blu-ray Bulk Combo
Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Xtreme 240
XSPC HighFlex Hose 1/2" ID, 3/4" OD, 19/12.7mm, 2m, Green/UV Green
XSPC G1/4" to 1/2" Barb Fitting (Chrome) XSPC G1/4" to 1/2" Barb Fitting

Okay, so we need a pump & resovoir still, need recommendations for them. Also a fan controller, watercooling blocks for the GPU's, a CPU waterblock and not sure if we just need clear coolant for the watercooling loop with the hose being u/v green.

What I am not convinced on is the GPU's. We can't decide between the 780's or the 7990's. Thoughts?

The only bit that is not negotiable is the case.

Help/advise would be appreciated. Cheers.

You'll need RAM & a better SSD

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £149.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (PV38G240C0K) £79.99
Total : £239.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The GTX780 is a great card, but over priced. If he is not concerned around the money, it's a good choice. If it's all going under WC, you could get the cheap 780 and OC it.

Just out of curiosity, has he seen THIS case? it would look mental with a nice WC setup. It's not in green, but red and orange look wicked.

Ah, RAM, knew I missed something out of the desription. We were struggling to find something to go with the 'Green' theme.

I am not really up on SSD's, despite having 2 myself, what is the difference between the one I listed and the one you linked to?

Yeah, that's why I wasn't sure if it was better to go with the 7990 instead?

I will be honest, we did look at that case, but were both a little worried about the cable management, making it look neat, in something like that. I do really like it however. With the Cosmos 2, there is a company that will fit a window into the side panel that we have found.

Many thanks for your advice

Black Ram goes with anything and is a good alternative and that stuff is seriously quick. The 7990 is a good card, 2x7979, but you'll need some serious cooling as the stock cooler will hit 90deg under load.

Yeah, the CPU and the GPU's will both be watercooled, but again wasn't sure what Pump and resovoir combo to go with. I have an XSPC D5 bay res/pump combo in mine, and it is fine for what I want to do with it, but not sure if something like that would be enough for 2x 7990's (for arguments sake) and the CPU?

I'm not sure you could do 2x7990, although that may be classed as quadfire. I think someone else would be better qualified to answer the WC question.

Yeah, I think the 2 7990's should be okay as, like you say, it would be 4 way crossfire, and the space should be okay on the Sniper board. The heat was more of the concern which is why I/we want to water-cool them.

I am swayed towards the 7990's instead of the GTX 780's, not sure why tbh. I have a 7950 in mine, and have been very pleased with it.

I would also mention that the new AMD cards are due out in 2 weeks. The 7990 may come down in price as retailers try and clear stock, or buy the new revision.

Quanities may need fiddling but the idea is there.. Subtle green. :D

Cheers Doomedspeed.

What makes you choose the 780's over the 7990's though? And, what makes you go back to the Ivybridge over the Haswell - just a better processor?

Iys Ivybridge-E which is better than haswel as it has 6 cores and 12 threads and the 2011 platform which this chip is on has better and faster sli support that haswel

What makes you choose the 780's over the 7990's though?

3 780's.. That will give him incredible performance.. You can't use 3 7990's that would be 'hex fire'.. That doesn't happen. You can only use 2 x 7990's as they are daul GPU's.

And, what makes you go back to the Ivybridge over the Haswell - just a better processor?

Its Ivybridge-E, a hex-core 12 thread processor. That will be an awesome rig. 4K is one hell of a budget

To be honest you could get a really good gfaming build (watercooled) for 2k-2.5k....I just used all the budget. :D

Urm what? Its pretty much half the price of a titan and pretty damn close to it in performance. Surely you were drunk when you wrote this?

He's right really...

The 780 is overpriced as is the TITAN but AMD have no answer for these cards yet so NVIDIA can go cash crazy. Considering the GTX 770 performance/price the 780 should be more £400-£450 rather than £500+..

Though if you can afford it they are a great card..

Yeah, cheers for the advice Doomedspeed (and everyone else!). Only thing we would definately want to change on your set-up is the case - for the Cosmos 2. That is the one thing set-in-stone. But, it is only a few quid more, so should not be an issue.

Okay, understand now about the processor, and I knew you couldn't have any more than 2x7990's. I take it the performance of the 3 780's will be significantly higher than 2x7990's?

Cheers.

No worries,

Its a shame not too have a window though.. I would be increbile to look at (without the side panel off).. Personal taste i guess really.

In Most intances yes, i should have asked before though, what resolution is the monitor and how many of them?

3 780's is completely over the top for one 1080p monitor.

It will have a window in it!! That is part of the reason for going for that case. There is a modifying company (not sure if I can name them), that CNC cut a window into the side of the case for about £35, they look really good with the window in.

I will have to check about the monitor set-up, to be completely honest I am not sure what his plans for that are, hadn't really thought about it myself tbh. Will check with him later on when I get home from work.
