Hiyoo,

As title really... I'm normally ridiculously careful when it comes to anything electronic and gadgets! however I think I may have slipped up with this one.

My iPad (with cover) was sitting happily on my desk at work, next to my desk phone. The handset to my desk phone slipped off the hook (I must not have put it down fully last time I used it) and landed on the cover side of my iPad. Thought nothing of it, until I flipped the cover over 10-15 minutes later revealing a crack, followed by hairline cracks which run down the whole side of the screen.

This is where said iPad was at the time the handset fell off. As you can see, not exactly a huge distance to fall. The handset is only around 100g.. if that!

And here you can see the damage... :/ there is a hairline crack that goes down the centre but don't think its visible.

Now, first thing I did was speak to apple, who told me its £207 to replace as its accidental damage. - £207 of which I do not have, not for a long time, as we've just moved house!

I'm a little bit annoyed, as I know several people with the same model of iPad, and have dropped it down the stairs, on concrete, had it flung off tables etc... not a single scratch! I've only had it just over a month as well :(

Now I've heard that you can buy the parts online and DIY. I've replaced a screen on a friends iPhone 3G before, how does that compare to the iPad. Where would the best place be to get spare parts?

Grrr!

30 minute job to replace.
Only non standard kit you need is very fine double sided sticky tape, hairdrier and an old credit card or similar to help open the casing. Replacement Glass panels are fairly cheap on Amazon/Ebay.

How cheap are they? I'll have a proper look when I'm home tonight, but just so I can get an idea.

Any idea on where to get the tape from?

I've actually got an appointment at the 'Genius Bar' on Thursday, but I'm not holding out much hope.

20 quid on ebay, there are guys who do the service for yo for approx £40 too if you dont fancy it, no experience with them though.
Double sided tape can be gotten for a quid or two on ebay also, or you can buy the specific pre cut shaped bits too for £2.50.

Solutions have been given above, all I wanted to do was call BS on your story :p There is no way the phone receiver falling that short distance would cause such a crack!

Edit: Just dropped my office phone (twice) on my iPad mini with no case and there is no mark (from about 3 and 12 inch height). You must have severely compromised the glass in some way prior to this event.

That's what everybody has said who I've told/shown the pictures too. No idea how its done it but it has. Don't really know what else to say about it!

I always look after my gadgets, its always under my arm or on the front car seat if its in transit between home and office. not had any knocks of any sort that I can think of, and I don't let the missus on it unsupervised ;) haha!

As baffled as you are, sir!

EDIT: I actually forgot to say, thanks for the prices/suggestions! much appreciated, I'll probably go down the DIY route if the 'Genuis bar' are unable to assist!

You can repair it but you have to be very careful if you do it. The wifi antenna in particular is very fragile and its hard to get the screen to "sit" right unless you have very good patience.

Thanks for the advice! - I've watched a few videos on youtube and they all recommend using a heat gun. Will a hairdryer do the trick?

Ironically my dad dropped his iPhone yesterday, so I've spent my lunch break replacing the glass on that!

Perfect! the missus has one that incinerates everything, don't know how she uses it! - mind you, women have asbestos hands!

Thanks for that, Brendy!

Its all about force. If the very edge of the received whipped round or hit the ipad on an edge of the phone the force will be much much higher. Its amazing how much more force is generated when you reduce the surface area that is hit.

Yeah think you might be right! still gutted something so small and light could cause so much damage! *shakey fist*

Other option is to claim on your home contents insurance if you have it, but also depends on what the level of excess is.

Last year my iPad 2 fell off a chair and I took it to Apple who wanted the £207 to replace it for another iPad 2. My insurance company though, the excess on a claim was less than that and they said it was not possible to repair so gave me vouchers to buy a new one. As they no longer sold a 64GB iPad 2, they gave me the value of the current 64GB retina.

I did think about that, missus deals with all things insurancy! so I'll have to ask her what the excess is! :)

Not a bad trade off then eh :p
