I'm looking for a streamer with rca/3.5mm outs, with phone app control as I want to play music headless, other 50% of use will be video streaming from my server.

I'd ideally want something like a boxee, wd, roku but with squeezebox plugin but doesn't seem to be out there, a raspberry pi could work and it does seem possible.

However squeezebox functionality isn't a must as long as music playback on an off the shelf streamer is possible headless with a phone app and isn't horrible to pick music.

Anyone got a streamer and find it fairly decent at music playback with phone app?

Cheers

Yes, I have a couple of Linn DS players, they don't do video and I'll guess sit a higher price point than required.

Both my Marantz BD player and AV amp will stream music and movies from the NAS, controlled by an App on the iPad. So I'd look at BD player that can do all you want.

Despite its age I still love my squeezebox classic, controlled by both my iPad and iPhone. No video though, so fails there.

Only up to £100'ish really as this Is just for limited use in bedroom, so purely a/v streamer, like a boxee, wd, etc etc.

It really does need to be a small box device, nothing fancy. Im going to do some testing with a pi for squeezebox and video use but I think i'd need to add a usb soundcard to it, a of the shelf streamer would be better if the phone app is good enough to pick music to play from media server as I don't want to have to have the tv on.

The roku looks very nice and feature rich but is missing local network streaming which just seems crazy and relies on plex support. I think maybe a boxee is looking best for ease or a pi for squeezebox and video but a bit of a pain.

I use a squeeze box classic for audio and a wd tvlive for video controlled by ipad and android phones.

Can you control everything from the app, or is it just like pause/play etc, could you pick an album to play with the tv off basically using the app?

I think I will probably go for the boxee, been reading about boxee+ which sounds quite good and they are a fairly good price now.

although am still looking into a pi as it's just so easy to play music via squeezebox and hopefully video play back would be good.

Thanks

Close to ordering a boxee but just not sure now that they have stopped support and the boxee servers could go down at any point.

Roku looks good but is plex media playback an uneeded hassle? or is it a breeze and also limited quality loss, plex server would run from a hp microserver n40L
