Baby Crushed to Death at Airport

Stupid people do stupid things, even smart people sometimes do stupid things.

I feel really sorry for the mother who will now have to live with this for rest of her life.

But if you were Robgum you would:

1) Not go on holiday so you don't make a mistake
2) when arriving at the airport all tired you would make your family have a rest for 1 hour so you can then have your wits about you before heading off to the carousel.
3) However, look at the queue at passport control, the kids could be pushed or stepped on. Tell you what, back to the lounge until the queue has gone down in 6 hours.

and so on ..................

4) That coach driver looks a bit dodgy, I think I'll get a taxi
5) Oh no, he's having a fag so better not put my family in danger
6) I'll hire my own car

and so on .....................

7) Excuse me Manager, is there any chance you can put a non slip carpet around the pool so my kids don't slip

and so on ......................

I wish I was Robgum

I could also not just jump on the bloody convenor belt, I think I managed a fair few holidays without doing that and i'm still in one piece

If you're going to take the **** then at least spell my name right you moron

Cheer up... at least you haven't had your tag misspelled as Scrounger :D

It think it's pretty certain that most of us wouldn't jump on somewhere potentially unstable with a baby strapped to our chest.

Mentioned this in the office and Woman sat next to me said she has seen so many people do this in airports.
So as stupid as YOU may think it is, a loit of LAZY people don't seem to think so.
She didn't MURDER her child or intend to cause HARM, so why should she be punished ????

To be prosecuted and convicted you must have intent, otherwise it is deemed an accident (unless gross negligence can be proved, which I don't think can in this case)

What kind of gcse law is this, INTENT OR RECKLESSNESS, learn men's reas of statutes please basic law. She should be prosecuted.

Just having signs up around mechanical machinery that can seriously injure or kill people isn't viewed as being acceptable by the HSE. Customers shouldn't have access to it, or there should be some form of guard or change in design to remove the risk.

Small children might not understand warning signs ;)

That would be relevant if a kid had done something, this was all the mothers actions and she was the responsible person for the baby.

At 5months the baby would have been incapable of getting into that situation without assistance, anyone capable of getting themselves onto the belt would also be capable of getting themselves off unless incapacitated.

They would also likely be too big to have been injured in the same way as the baby.

Dangerous to a helpless 5 month old baby does not equal dangerous to an able bodied person.

The baby could not have put itself in that position.
Could a toddler? No matter how you try to argue this, signs were not an adequate means of prevention of accident here. A simple design change to remove the gap in the belts would have prevented this occurring.

Stupid people don't deserve to lose their kids just because of a botched design.

Stupid people don't deserve to scald their children just because their McDonalds coffee is hot *shrug*.

I would say that causation lies with the parents.
There is an obvious risk with hot coffee, not so much with a belt that's not moving. You'll also be given coffee in a cup with a lid specifcally to mitigate against the risk of spillage.
If the gap didn't exist it would not have happened. Sticking signs up, which she may not have seen, actually indicate that they knew it was inherently dangerous, but worse than that didn't deal with the problem.

There's no obligation to have any precautions whatsoever when serving a cup of coffee. At least in the UK.

Ultimately, it's heavy plant at an airport. I think your point is arguable, but not easily. Actually I take that back, I'll reluctantly settle.

Just stop, stop stop. Your trying to dictate the law all wrong. For a serious s18 crime OAPA, murder or manslaughter one does not have to foresee the consequences. The mom had a duty of care and breached that duty. The airport also had a duty of care and compared to the reasonable man they will not be prosecuted. Stop dictating law or trying to justify your reasons as they are invalid in the English law.

Have you been abroad? Have you seen the world?
Half the world is a flipping deathtrap to children. Its widespread, and it is everywhere. There is a H&S culture in the UK, it does keep people safe, but they tend to be utterly unprepared for the rest of the world.

Spain is a deep dark recession, they were third world on H&S before their economic crisis, replacing heavy plant at their airports will not have been a priority.

We have yet to hear the full circumstances, but in most of the world every pothole isn't marked with yellow lines awaiting someone to fill it in and a warning sign. Someone falls in a hole, its their fault, and they don't attempt to sue the council for not warning them.

Putting a child onto equipment is madness, yes it might be easier to lift, yes it might be stopped etc, but its a big piece of mangling machinery. You keep your kids away, especially so when you are not certain of your surroundings.
