Is the GTX 780 overkill for a 1920x1080 resolution?

Is the GTX 780 a good choice for a 1920x1080 resolution? or is it just a waste of money? and if so what card is best for this resolution? prefer NVIDIA cards, thanks.

Games are only gonna get more graphicly demanding with the next gen consoles, I mean crysis 3 and metro last light will not hold a steady 60 FPS at 1080p when maxed out.

So in answer to your question a 780 is not a waste of money for 1080p if you want smooth FPS at max image quality.

as raven says.

too max all current games at 1080 on max settings at 60 fps a 780 gtx wont do it . you need a titan or above ati 7990. or crossfire /sli

so no not overkill.

Thanks this info helped, would it be a good idea to SLI a 780 in the future or will the next gen cards be the best option?

Thanks mate, this helped a lot :D

I've had 670's and 680's on their own and in SLI @1080p 120hz, the 780 is the best overall gaming experience in my opinion. No way I would have anything less now.

Treat yourself :) and say its an early Xmas pressie!

Ive got SLI 780s at that res.

One card is only just enough to max out games like Cyrus and not see slow down sometimes in game when using highest settings but even with SLI I see the fps drop to 65 or so in Crysis 2 using dx11 and high res textures.

Also whats too fast today is too slow tomorrow.

Right now id wait until the 25 to see what AMD cards and prices are like if nothing else it should make NVidia price drop on the 780.

This, me too! Had high clocking 670s in SLI. Sold them a month ago and got a classified 780, it's not far off my 670s ifim honest and the gameplay is ultra smooth. 120hz monitor too.

Good to hear that illuz, im considering a move to a 780 as well.

Try tomb raider on ultra with tress fx enabled @1080p / 1200p and it will make a 780 sweat, as will far cry 3 and crysis 3.

I always bork when I see folks advise that a 780 at this res is overkil! ;)

Tomb Raider @1080p maxed on a single GPU, it is not that much of a sweat

Having said that there is never a problem with having too much GPU grunt but too little is a real pain.
