New ISP for my dad

My dad's exchange has ADSL/ADSL Max only - no ADSL2, no LLU, no nothing - therefore the only option is something BT Wholesale.

He lives 1.9 miles from the exchange (using Google Maps to plot the road) - I doubt the line will be any shorter than this, possibly longer.

For the last few years, he's been with PlusNet - since the times that they offered a 1mb package - and, despite multiple communications with PlusNet after upgrading to their "up to 8mb" package asking them to re-sync the line, he still has a sync speed of 1152kbps down, 288kbps up - the very same he's always had.

As you can imagine - this is just ridiculous!

His old work, which is 6 houses down the road, was getting around 3-4mbps - whilst not blisteringly fast by some standards here, is still much, much better than his current offerings, and would at least make the basic services such as iPlayer and YouTube somewhat useable, even if not at high resolution, unlike the current situation which is that it is just completely unusable.

They do not have Sky, and it is very unlikely they will ever get it (they just don't watch enough TV to justify it), and are with BT for their phone line/calls, which I do not believe they wish to change.

So - given a lack of any LLU operators whatsoever, and not wishing to stay with PlusNet any more - does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been with Virgin for years, and prior to that O2 LLU, so my current knowledge of BT Wholesale providers is zero - hence my request to you, OcUK, for information, advice and recommendations! :)

Or - to throw a curveball - the mobile signal actually isn't too bad there - what are thoughts on something like a 3 One Plan SIM in a compatible router?

Have you removed the ring wire? Connect the modem directly to the master socket?

Plusnet is usually my first choice when only BT wholesale is avaliable, but maybe moving to BT may help.

Yes, and yes :)

Despite both upgrading from their 1mb to "up to 8mb" package, as well as multiple calls to their technical support, the sync speed has NEVER changed from 1152/288 - indicating that they have never actually done what we have asked, which is to set the training off again.

They might get one more opportunity to do so at the weekend when I'm there and can call them - but I think the only way to get any chance of getting the line re-trained is to change supplier.

I'll admit some bias here due to working for them, but Zen's tech support teams have a good reputation for being able to get the best performance out of a BT wholesale line, obviously working closely with BT to do so.

However having said that I would expect better from Plusnet. Have you tried messaging
'bobpullen'? He's a member on here, and part of Plusnet Customer support. I'm sure he'd be able to prod the right people to get your dads circuit sorted.

Cheers for that link KIA - really useful.

BT Recorded Line Length to Exchange (m): 2445

That works out at 1.52 miles - which is interesting, because Google Maps reckons 1.9 miles from the exchange to his house along the road, and even as the crow flies, it's 1.75 miles!

How would I know if he's on an IP Stream product?

Hi all,

Here are the router stats:

Code:
Statistics -- ADSL
Mode: G.DMT
Type: Fast
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status: No Defect

Total ES: 123
Total SES: 0
Total UAS: 24

  	Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 21.3 30.0
Attenuation (dB): 41.5 25.0
Output Power (dBm): 11.9 19.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 7712 1208

R (number of check bytes in RS code word): 0 0
S (RS code word size in DMT frame): 1 1
D (interleaver depth): 1 1

Super Frames: 97256850 97256848

HEC Errors: 28 40
OCD Errors: 0 0
LCD Errors: 0 0

Will be calling PlusNet to get them to set the line off training - the attainable rate listed above might not be totally accurate - but even getting 3-4mbps would be much better than the 1152/288 we've had here for the last.... 8 years since getting ADSL installed here.

Your SNR is sky high (21 dB) which I would say is a major factoring issue. Does the line drop often? If it puts it in perspective also, your Dad's line attenuation is 41 dB while mine is a massive 52 dB and I get 5Mb on ADSL2+! (My SNR is 7 dB)

I'd say he should at least be seeing 6/7Mb so the attainable rate is fairly realistic.

I'd double check the ring wires are removed on all phone sockets, make sure none of the wiring is exposed that could cause interference. Maybe try replace the ADSL filters? If no improvement try plug it into the test socket. Lastly try another router, if the stats don't improve it needs escalating with Plusnet. As someone already suggested I'd message Bob Pullen on here who works for PN he should hopefully get the ball rolling.

Edit: sorry just read your op it says no adsl2. Still I got 3mb with my line before I got adsl2 so he should see 3-4mb.

I've sent an email to Bob Pullen, and he replied within a couple of hours :)

He's requested a line regrade from the fixed 1mbps to IPStream Max, which should hopefully go through tomorrow, and estimates from the BT checker is 2.5mbps
