Hot New BMW M135i

Unfortunately, non performance cars are too becoming even more economical, which means the gap isn't shrinking as fast as you think, which means people will still generally stick to the more economical, slower cars.

Leave them to it. Quite often it's only profitable for manufacturers to produce high-performance versions of cars because their less-powerful siblings sell in such high numbers.

Also without sounding like a snob it wouldn't feel special owning the high-performance versions of such cars if everyone else drives around in them also. I've always wanted a Cooper S but you see so many of them it ruins the ownership experience to some extent, despite being outstanding at what it does. I hope for this reason cars like the M135i remain in limited numbers.

As you did with the iPhone 5 :D

Probably because demand outstripped supply. I thought they only did a limited amount of RS3s where as anyone can go and spec-up and put in an order for an M135i.

Truth is I don't know much about the RS3. It doesn't really interest me and even if I could afford one I personally think they look quite bland for an RS.

The RS3 isn't a limited run you can still order a new one now, I suspect the M135i will sell well taking a lot of sales away from Golf GTI, VXR and STs resulting in a large number in the second hand market in a couple of years the more choice of cars the lower the price. They also seem fairly cheap to lease which isn't going to help.

Got to admit I am tempted with one but I think it will still be a F11 I replace my Golf with.

Sure you're never going to get 38mpg unless you drive like a grandma but that's not the point, the fact is it can achieve that figure. It's almost unbelievable.

Well not really

It's a figure you've been able to obtain from BMW's for years - even the similarly powerful 335i 6 years ago. It's 10-20% better each time which is not 'almost unbelievabe' at all, its 'to be expected'.

We'll go with 'impressive' then ;)

I can't think of any other petrol cars offered by competitors that offer 320bhp and 38mpg as a real-world combined figure.

Just out of interest do you think they'll do an M Performance 3 series or just leave it as the 335i and the M3?

I wouldn't be surprised if on a steady run around 70-75mph it will do over 40mpg with the autobox as the 8th gear will be pretty tall, I suspect the average will be under 35mpg still impressive figures.
