Well.... what can I say, I got linked to this buy some friends as I've had about 5 Metro's in the past (Several MG's, GTa, Turbo, Gti MPi) and I always liked the Group B cars, especially the 6R4.

Which brings me to this listing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221286257...l?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=221286257092&_rdc=1

Now, the only thing I take exception to is that it is listed as a 6R4, and in a round about way tries to say it's not a look-a-like, or at least not a crap look-a-like. I had my tired silly head on, and asked him to amend his advert to just basically say that it is a replica. Real 6R4's are worth a hell of a lot of money, and the real deal are originally made from a Maestro floor pan (I believe), and a other details like a V8 cut down to a V6 and welded (The later models had original blocks though).

I sent him:

How can you claim it's a 6R4? The 6R4's didn't even use a metro floor pan,
they didn't use Subaru engine (they used initially welded V8 blocks reduced
to 6 cylinder) etc etc. I understand you want to advertise and get
attention, but it is NOT a 6R4. Please amend your listing.

Now, I realise that me asking him to change it is a bit of a crappy thing to do, but we are where we are... so... I just have to love the response I got :-D

Peckerhead!!! Get a life!!

I have to say, that made me laugh real hard, I've never been called that :D

Anyway, have to say that I actually admire the work that has gone into the conversion and it would like quite nice on the road (IMO... I imagine others will hate it). Just a shame it's listed incorrectly, and I hope some silly people don't buy it thinking it is the genuine article. On a separate note, I wouldn't have started with a sun roofed model.

Got to remember that, peckerhead. :D

TBF he seems to have listed what it really is fairly well (in the usually eloquent eBay stylee). I'd say if this is the sort of vehicle you'd be interested in, you'd know what you're looking at.

My mate has the real Mccoy...

I wouldn't have thought it's a serious concern, if you're really interested in a 6R4 then the chances are you'll have done your homework and won't be at risk of buying a replica. It doesn't immediately occur as the sort of thing you'd buy on a whim but credit to them for the effort they've put into it.

I don't see the issue, it clearly states in the description what it started life as, there are even photographs of the car as it begun as a blue auto metro.

You should probably have armed yourself with a little more knowledge before posting this, as we seem to have a pot/kettle situation.

Only the first 6R4 prototypes used the "cut down" Rover V8 and very modifed Maestro floor pans. The production 6R4's used an entirely different engine and pretty much a bespoke floor pan, certainly very few similarities to a Maestro one.

if you read he actually used a v6 from a gto. I would actually think it is a better car than the original as it uses japanese parts instead of longbridge.

Also maybe you should rename your post as it says look a like when it should really say replica ;)

Can't believe you admitted to sending that

I don't think they actually cut and welded the engine blocks either

Then you should really do some reading :) They didn't have a suitable V6 engine so they had to cut down a V8. And heck yes, what else is is GD good for but posters like me to make fools of themselves ;) :p

I'm well aware of the history, I just wasn't going to list every silly thing and just went with the major items on the list. The last time I looked at the history though was over 10 years ago when I wanted one and didn't have the £30k to spare lol. As for the engine, the last time I read the MG info it said that engines for all the homologation were cut down V8's, and there was no info at which point they actually swapped to proper V6 blocks.

I think it was a fair reply to be honest :)

Indeed. I just feel he could have been clearer. As said, seems to have done a fairly good job at least on the surface. But then you get to things such as he's listed it with an engine, and there is no evidence of an engine in the pictures. He is quite happy to **** of other 6R4 replicas but then suggests his is akin to the real deal.

So point me in the direction of a good source that confirms this? So did these welders magic in four valve heads too?

6R4
Bore: 92mm, Stroke: 75mm

Rover 3.5 V8 (if thats the V8 they used)
bore 88.9 mm, stroke 71.0 mm

Bore spacing would be interesting to find out

The engine is based on a cosworth design isn't it? Nothing to do with the venerable rover V8 engine.

Ended up in the XJ220 IIRC as well.
