Currently using a Gigabyte 7950 which has a native HDMI port to connect to my AV amp->LCD TV for audio and video.

Noticed the ASUS card only has 2xDVI and 4xdisplay port, ports.

Can I still do HDMI audio to my amp via the supplied DVI->HDMI dongle?

Not sure if I can link to another forum but someone else was asking the same thing about this card and an 'Asus Expert' posted the following response:

"Audio will be sent over the DVI link with the HDMI adapter. While it's not an official part of the DVI spec, this has been a common feature on video cards for a very long time. You just need to make sure that the SPDIF components of the Catalyst driver package is installed"

Yeah, I had no problem with using an HDMI-DVI converter on the DVI port to get audio on my TV on the Asus 7970.

Hi all,

Also looking to pick up the Asus but as I use my PC as a HTPC too, need to make sure that I can get audio pass-through with a DVI-HDMI dongle, I have been searching high and low and there are so many conflicting bits of info i'm still scratching my head!

I read that you need a specific DVI-HDMI adapter as any normal one won't work for audio, do they provide an adapter? I looked at several unboxing vids and reviews and couldn't see anything about the DVI-HDMI adapter being included.

So question is, if it works which adapter do you get for the audio pass-through?

The only one that looks specific on OcUK is this one from HIS, but doesn't say anything about 7k support.

I rang up tech support here too and they didn't know and suggested using DP-HDMI.

Thanks in advance.

^ It works fine, see my post above yours. It has a DVI to HDMI adapter included.

Thanks teppic, sorry for all the questions, it's been quite difficult to find any solid answer and before forking out the cash wanted to make absolutely sure.

I'll go pick one up :)

No problem. Small details can be hard to find out. You don't need any special kind of adapter, you're probably thinking of the active/passive DisplayPort adapters.

just to confirm it does work, my 7970 is now installed and capable of surround goodness in both 5 and 7.1

Can either of you guys point to what I'm doing wrong please? I have tried both DVI slots with DVI-HDMI Adapter and visuals are fine, but no audio....
I can set spidf optical output and recive optical out just fine which is ok for headphone use, but I'd like standard speakers available too.

I downloaded the latest catalyst driver from amd, is that right?

and this is the result...

EditNever Mind I'm an Idiot....

I was posative I had gone through all the TV options first before checking and re-checking the PC stuff, but NO....

I tried it in the PS3 hdmi port and it worked, returned to original and double checked all settings and for some reason that port we set to use analogue input for sound :(

what a D........ I am ...
