Morning all!

I am moving to Nottingham from Cardiff as I have a new research job in UoN, however having spent the past 8 years in Cardiff and that being the only place that I have lived away from 'home', I'm a bit apprehensive about moving.

For the people of Nottingham, what are the areas to avoid etc? I can find statistics online however some personal insights would be great!

Any help would be great guys! :)

Edit: The only thing I knew about Nottingham (as a place) before the interview was that it has the Games Workshop's HQ there!

In before bullet/stab-proof vest.

On a more serious note, the better areas are in the suburbs, outside the city. So you're talking places like West Bridgford, Wollaton, Wilford, Ruddington, Gamston, Mapperly (I think it's alright round there).

The studenty areas around Lenton are a crap shoot in terms of safety, but stay away from Radford, places like Bulwell, Hucknall, Arnold, Clifton, The Meadows and St. Anns.

Offering decent areas would really depend on your personal mobility, and whether you'll be renting or buying. Also, budget?

Nothing wrong with Arnold tbh, Many parts of the meadows aint too bad these days.

Avoid Bulwell, Crabtree, Broxtowe, Strelly, St Anns, Hyson Green & Radford.

Agree with the above to be honest! Not sure which campus you'll be working at - but may be worth looking at .NET Trams to look at the tram routes, I find that the trams and pretty decent and cheap.

What's your situation with transport and accommodation? Aa above Arnold is ok but pretty far from the main campus certainly wouldn't be wanting to use public transport.

Thanks for the input thus far... I'm looking to live within walking distance (30-45 walk is okay with me), however I would want to be on the side that is close to the city centre (preferably) so it doesn't take an hour and a half to walk to 'town'.

I have been looking in Lenton and it does seem studenty. I'll bare in mind the 'blacklisted' places you guys have mentioned!

:)

Arnold is an OK area but stay away from Bestwood and stuff around the ring road / Oxclose lane.

Add Woodthorpe to the list of good places :) but again its North of the City so you would be looking at a bus route / driving or a relatively long walk.

If you are looking for within walking distance you will be likely be limited to Wollaton, City Apartment (there are some decent stuff on Castle Boulavard / Castle Marine), that said chunks of Sneinton are good value these days but its a decent walk to UoN.

Nothing wrong with Hucknall either. The night life has gone down hill in recent years but it's only half an hour from the city centre.

Like any town it has it's areas to avoid but generally you won't find any hassle here.

The Park is probably the best place to live. Lots of Victorian character, near the city centre and not too far from the university. It's where I'd move to, if an appropriate job came up in Nottingham. I keep checking the university website, but nothing suitable for me yet :(.

Admittedly my opinion of Arnold is from the state of the area about 7-8 years ago. Tons of Nottingham has really improved during that time, so that's a fair cop. :)

Can't believe I forgot Broxtowe.

"We don't ever go to Broxtowe..."

You can get something decent in Beeston for ok money, but it's a very hit and miss area so you'd be wise to do your research around there, too.

Broxtowe massive! lols

If you'r going to be based around UoN then look at beeston or wollaton. Lived in Beeston myself for 4 years, again its hit and miss some places are really nice and others are dives.

its fine ! just don't go to areas which have reputations . or if you do just have your wits about you :p

city is pretty decent overall. as long as you don't go looking for trouble you wont get it.
